higher wages for the servers... by the customers. Fnbs
  • I understand that, but I’m talking about Canada. In Canada if you’re paid $13, $18, hell $50 an hour, it doesn’t matter whether or not you make tips. Your employer must pay you your full hourly wage no matter what.

  • Got asked where the rest was, tray nachos!
  • Is it normal in parts of the world for lettuce to go on nachos? I’ve never seen that before.

  • higher wages for the servers... by the customers. Fnbs
  • That’s the thing here - the employer must pay you the same regardless of tips. Tips are always a bonus, not part of your wage.

  • As a developer, I never get tips. Even on my open-source stuff, I have a “tip jar” PayPal link on the very bottom of my readme files. Never asked, never required. Know how much I’ve made in tips over the years? Exactly $0.

  • It’s getting stupid in Canada too despite our laws being different (as in, you cannot make less than minimum wage if you work in a place that allows tips).

I got my oil changed a few months ago and the machine prompted me for a tip. For what? The mechanic did their job, I paid for said job. Transaction concluded.

I tried Crumbl cookies for the first (and last, holy crap overpriced) time. Got asked for a tip. For what? I got six cookies in a box and then had to leave the store because there’s no seating to eat them there. The person who helped me took my order. That’s it. Another employee put six cookies in a box and put them on a counter and said my number. Not a lot of wiggle room to go “above and beyond.”

What’s next? A tip at the grocery store for the cashier scanning my groceries? A tip at the drive-thru?

Here’s a tip. Don’t work for an employer who doesn’t pay you what you’re worth.

EDIT: Actually, the tip at the drive-thru is already a thing. Starbucks prompts for a tip at the drive-thru. For what? The barista took my order and made my coffee. I drove up to a window, took it, and fucked off.

  • Any auto-grat on a bill is an instant big fat 0 on the tip line for me. Fuck double dipping on customers subsidizing shitty wages. It shouldn’t even need to happen once. If the restaurant can’t pay a reasonable wage it shouldn’t be in business.

I would be completely okay with a restaurant charging a bit more for meals if they also had a “do not tip” policy. Wait staff should be expected to do their jobs, the restaurant should be expected to pay their employees. As a customer I should be expected to pay the restaurant, full stop.

  • People would use "Hide all political posts and comments" more often than any other filter
  • Is there an option to filter by keyword? Not on the app I use, but is that a Lemmy/kbin/etc feature that the app just doesn’t implement? I’d love to filter any mention of:

    • Leftist/right-wing/alt-left/alt-right

    • Nazis

    • Capitalism

    • Trump

    • Trudeau

    • Biden

    • LGBT+ (let’s be honest, 99% of content mentioning it is ragebait/political/controversial in some way)

    • Gun control

    • Abortion

The list goes on. I’d probably end up with like two posts a day on my feed but damn would those posts be peaceful.

  • Without using pronouns (me, he, she, it, etc) or articles (a, an, the), how did you come up with your user name?
  • Skyline good car. 969 good number. Put together, good and good.

  • Squabblr now officially a "free speech" cesspool, admins removed or forced out by owner
  • I may not be onto anything here, this may just be a coincidence. However, the timing of these two events are suspicious.

1: Squabbles.io rebrands to squabblr.co. The .io domain explicitly forbids anything that may be considered illegal by any country. The site could be shut down if this is violated. You know what would be considered hate speech by some countries, such as Canada? Discrimination of someone based on their gender identity, ie trans people.

2: Squabblr rebrands to a “free speech” website and removes all explicit mention of LGBT+ being protected under their ToS. Within microseconds (slight exaggeration, but within less than 24 hours) people are chiming in with the “trans women are not women” statements.

Was that planned, or just extremely unfortunate timing?

  • [bug] I can’t comment on Mlem
  • Works fine for me. Latest version from iOS App Store.

  • I see you’re also from lemmy.world. Testing from lemmy.world!

  • Wish I had more time to finish some JRPGs
  • Oh man. I’m so torn between the purple and the grey 35XX. Both a love letter to great handhelds.

  • Does anyone else use old equipment for homelab use? If so, what are you running?
  • I have the CPU and RAM of two PowerVault NX3200s that were destined for the skip jammed into one chassis. It powers one hell of a nice Plex server running on UnRaid.

  • Controller vs mouse in console games
  • Some games have aim assist. Use it religiously when available. Holding ZL will “snap” your sights to an enemy you’re aiming at, mow ‘em down and let go of ZL. Rinse and repeat.

  • Paralyzed by choice, which handheld to best game on?
  • I love my Anbernic handhelds. Pretty much any of them, but I draw the line at the Android ones. Might as well just get a controller for a phone at that point. The Linux ones are neat though - currently my daily driver is the 351V. Debated getting a 351P, partially because I mostly play GBA and the screen is made for that but also because I collect them.

  • How many steam deck folks are here and what are you playing?
  • Recently set up EmuDeck, so the real question is what am I not playing? Jokes aside, currently taking a break from the Deck for D4 (wanted better graphics and smoother framerate so I went with PS5). Will probably grab it on PC when there's a sale just to be able to play it on the go... well, wherever wifi is available.

Other than that it's been mostly "Fuck Around With Tweaking the OS and Settings to Get Games Just Right and Then Never Actually Play Them" Simulator. Windows 11 runs surprisingly smooth off of just a MicroSD card.

  • CP2077 Phantom Liberty
  • Cyberpsycho is really good, but I like the passives that legendary Synapse Burnout (Defeating an enemy with any quickhack causes nearby enemies to panic) and Suicide (Causing an enemy to panic reduces the RAM cost of your next Ultimate quickhack by 2) provide. It allows for chain suicides in most cases.

  • CP2077 Phantom Liberty
  • Contagion is so good. My only gripe with it is the bug where the ticking sound of the quickhack keeps playing even when you exit the quickhack view. It gets very annoying very fast. Otherwise, open up with contagion, finish the job with suicide and synapse burnout just for fun.

  • CP2077 Phantom Liberty
  • Maybe I’ll finally do a throwing knife build that I never got around to. I love how versatile the game is. No two playthroughs have been the same.
