If the first solar entrepreneur hadn't been kidnapped, would fossil fuels have dominated the 20th century?
  • I fully agree. In cities and places with a grid, fossil fuels will absolutely dominate, while rural grids/independent homeowners could use solar. However, I do think the cost of acquiring such panels could be prohibitively expensive for some rural homeowners.

  • I guess the glory of Japanese BBC facts are forever locked away from me.

Edit: Memmy reposted this comment 4 times and then promptly crashed. This proves my theory that Memmy is sentient and does not approve of criticism of any kind.

  • If the first solar entrepreneur hadn't been kidnapped, would fossil fuels have dominated the 20th century?
  • I did not read any of your linked articles, but the answer is yes, fossil fuels most certainly would have dominated the 20th century because they are:

    • Cheap
    • Stable, you don’t have to depend on the sun shining
    • Nobody really cared about climate change back then, they were estimating a few centuries and humans… aren’t that forward thinking

Edit: I was beaten by another commentator lol

  • Twitter is losing daily active users. CEO Linda Yaccarino confirmed it.
  • Yeah, it is, tech wise.

But here’s the thing: Mastodon is not a viable alternative for most people right now because it’s missing the “normies”. Most people don’t even know what FOSS stands for and probably think it’s an STD, nuclear missile, or some form of coronavirus. Most of them are perfectly happy being on Twitter/Reddit/TikTok/FaceBook/Instagram. Without the masses, Mastodon cannot be a Twitter (or X, whatever you call it) replacement.

  • Greek statues commuting in a crowded bus
  • It tells us that the training data mostly consists of male statues because most pictures of greek statues are male (source: google and ddg searches). Also, when most people think of "Greek Statue", they think of something like what was generated. That is all there is to it.

  • Texas power prices soar 20,000% as brutal heat wave sets off emergency
  • Texas is connected to the Eastern (Florida to Canada) grid, the Western (Cali to Canada) grid, and a Mexican grid not part of the US/CA system via tie-ins. It is the only state in the continental US with it’s own grid, which was not a smart decision (cough cough feb 2021). The most outrageous part was that they could have bought power from Mexico, east, or west and import it via those tie-ins during Feb 2021 but chose not to. Power was out for millions for over a week in freezing temperatures. Fuck Texas. Fuck CenterPoint Energy.

Additional Information: Besides Texas, Quebec and Alaska have their own grids as well. Alaska is the only grid without any tie-ins.

  • Yeah, unfortunately iPhones don’t have a option to ask each time a USB cable is plugged in (has to unlock first), which is a feature I love in macOS. You can turn on a feature disabling USB Data after an hour of not unlocking on iOS though, which I do.

  • Huh, you have a valid point. I haven’t tried it yet, but it probably doesn’t access/unencrypt too much more than the regular lock screen, given thats its just a glorified alarm clock with notifications. Ironically, some of the most private stuff (photos, notes) don’t have CompleteProtection, so that’s a current gaping vulnerability. And yes, if the FBI really wants your data, there are RAM reading tools for iPhone.

Here is a stackexchange thread about AFU/DFU/CP if you didn’t know.

  • PSA: LEMMY.WORLD WAS COMPROMISED

If you are a lemmy.world user, log out and log back in to clear cookies!

Last night, lemmy.world was compromised via an XSS vulnerability with custom emoji. Using this vulnerability, attackers took control of an admin account. The site redirected to mp4 files when logged in, and porn sites when not logged in. The issue was resolved by lemmy.world admins soon after it started, but the attacker regained control of the compromised admin account around ten minutes after resolution, redirecting users to the same mp4 files and sites. Soon after that, the site became inaccessable. The issue is currently resolved, and lemmy dev team has been notified of this vulnerability. sh.itjust.works will not be affected, as we do not have any custom emojis. If you own an instance with custom emojis, it is advised to remove these emojis and clear your cookies.

The following is the original post:

PSA: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCESS LEMMY.WORLD, THERE MIGHT BE MALWARE

Lemmy.world member here. I created this account after .world started redirecting me to porn sites and odd mp4 files. We might want to defederate to limit the potential impact. Also, SJW might be affected by the same vulnerabilities as .world, so maybe the admins here should look at that.

Edit: Situation seems to have stabilized. Some site icons aren't loading, but otherwise everything seems stable. Read Edit2

Edit2: HOLY SHIT ITS BACK Read Edit3

Edit3: lemmy.world is now down as of 10:56 PM CST (USA) Read Edit4

Edit4: lemmy.world is now up, but serving an error as of 11:03 CST (USA) See a screenshot of this error. I also got logged out, hopefully it doesn't mean they just wiped the databases lol.

Edit5: Edit4 still applies, but I can now access lemmy.world via Memmy on my phone. Wefwef (Voyager now) does not work, however. Timestamp: 11:34 PM CST (USA)

Edit6: lemmy.world restored. Compromised admin account said something in a weird post. I'm going to bed now, my brain is play-dough rn. Will update you guys tomorrow morning.
