PSA: If the first Smart Search in Immich takes a while
  • I decided on the ViT-B-16-SigLIP2__webli model, so switched to that last night. I also needed to update my server to the latest version of Immich, so a new smart search job was run late last night.

Out of 140,000+ photos/videos, it's down to 104,000 and I have it set to 6 concurrent tasks.

I don't mind it processing for 24h. I believe when I first set immich up, the smart search took many days. I'm still able to use the app and website to navigate and search without any delays.

  • YSK that apart from not having a car and voting, the single greatest thing you can do for the climate is simply eating less red meat.
  • That's like saying "it's more ethical if Nazis killed only adults, because they take up more space than kids in a gas chamber."

The needless suffering and killing of any animal is horrifically unethical, and if we can, we should actively stop participating in it.

There are a ton of mental gymnastics used to justify the consumption of animals. Almost none apply to modern civilization.

  • YSK that apart from not having a car and voting, the single greatest thing you can do for the climate is simply eating less red meat.
  • You can never make animal production green. The amount of clear-cutting needed for beef as an example would blow your mind. Then you factor in the ground, air, and water pollution from these factory farms, and you've just fucked up into entire regions, just to sustain a food source that isn't even needed.

  • Self-Driving Tesla Tries to Crash into Oncoming Traffic On The Highway… Again
  • These should have never been allowed on roads.

Think about it: human drivers are put through training and then tested. Then they are licensed and given demerit points so if they screw up enough, they don't get to drive.

    But Teslas? "Oops". Carry on.

We'd never be OK with humans driving into oncoming traffic like a suicidal teen. Why are we still OK with suicidal machines doing it?

  • San Diego wants to add car lanes to a dangerous boulevard where a 12 year-old girl was killed.
  • There should be no place even close to residential areas that have more than 1 or 2 lanes for cars. Anything more is a highway, and those should be only to connect cities, not to go shopping.

The way cities are built, we overuse "arterial roads" and put them everywhere. Such terrible design, which is why people get killed far too often.

  • Not bike, but maybe you guys can still provide input (re: e-scooter wheel bearings)
  • No joke, some e-scooter wheels are the devil to work with if you have to change a tire. Without special equipment, it's like a multi-person job!

Some models use split-rim wheels, which are supposed to be far better to work with.

But fortunately, the front bearing on this model is super easy to replace. I might just go for the bearing swap and then clean the drum brake while I'm at it.

She deserves to be cared for after this many years.

  • PSA: If the first Smart Search in Immich takes a while
  • That’s a Celeron right?

Yup, the Intel J4125 Celeron 4-Core CPU, 2.0-2.7Ghz.

I switched to the ViT-SO400M-16-SigLIP2-384__webli model, same as what you use. I don't worry about processing time, but it looks like a more capable model, and I really only use immich for contextual search anyway, so that might be a nice upgrade.

  • [SOLVED] Seeking e-scooter recommendations: slow, short range, 10-inch/25cm wheels
  • LOL. It looks like a IEC 60320 C5 connector.

As a bonus, it CAN still take a powerbrick charger, and high speed chargers are available in that case. Really depends on your use case, but if you're only riding <10km at a time, you won't need a fast charger.

  • [SOLVED] Seeking e-scooter recommendations: slow, short range, 10-inch/25cm wheels
  • I'm partial to the Ninebot Max (the OG dark grey one). You can still find them for sale, and while they aren't the most advanced, they offer some wonderful benefits.

Mine reliably goes 45km and cruises up to 30km/h.

It uses a front drum brake and electronic rear brake. This combo is reliable, and maintenance free. No worrying about brake pads, bent or contaminated rotors.

The scooter has performed well in rain, heat, winters (not in snow!), and has been reliable throughout thousands of km without a flat.

It's not super heavy and can be stored just about anywhere.

It doesn't have suspension, but is still comfortable to ride, and not having suspension means less to worry about.

Basically, it's reliable, extremely maintenance-free, and has great range.

Oh, it also uses just a standard "desktop computer cable" for charging, so no need to bring around a charging brick.

  • Lithium-ion battery fires jump 162% in Toronto over 2 years, city says
  • From 2022 to 2024, the number of fires jumped 162 per cent, from 29 to 76

I thought the numbers would be much higher, tbh.

When you consider that only the City of Toronto has a population of over 3 million, and each person owns a lot of devices with lithium-ion batteries, we're talking about dozens of fires out of tens of millions of batteries.

Still, lithium-ion battery fires are no joke, so minimizing the risks should be a priority.

Not bike, but maybe you guys can still provide input (re: e-scooter wheel bearings)

So, my Ninebot Max e-scooter has a "loud" front wheel, and when I spin it, the bearing sounds "dry".

I have replacement bearings, but then I noticed this:

When I spin the wheel by hand, it will keep spinning SUPER SMOOTHLY and... no joke... can keep spinning for over 10 minutes! To me, that sounds amazing, and now I'd rather not change the bearings.

Does this make sense? I would imagine the same can happen on a bike wheel.

Should I just leave it? LOL

Bike lanes on Richmond-San Rafael Bridge are contributing to pollution, car drivers say
  • the bridge is 5.5 mi (8.85km) long, the very shortest commutes between destinations on the two sides is about 7mi (11.25km), taking about 40mins each way.

Unless someone is riding at a very slow 16km/h pace, it would take far less than 40 minutes to ride that 11km (without an ebike).

On that note, if someone had the choice of sitting in traffic for an hour, or enjoying a beautiful 40 minute ride over a bridge, I think it would be an easy choice to make 🤗

  • Bike lanes on Richmond-San Rafael Bridge are contributing to pollution, car drivers say
  • That has the same vibe as, "I don't hate black people. I just don't think they deserve to drink from the same fountain, use the same bathroom, or eat in the same restaurant as me!"

Rather than advocate for the removal of someone else's active, green form of transportation, he should be advocating for car pooling, better public transportation, WFH to lessen the burden of commuter traffic, and smaller vehicles.

  • Bike lanes on Richmond-San Rafael Bridge are contributing to pollution, car drivers say
  • The coalition argues that not only does the bike lane create more traffic,

False. Cars create the traffic, and "one more lane, bro" will do nothing to help. This is a fact played out EVERYWHERE.

but it also creates more pollution from all the cars backed up on the bridge.

Sounds like a car-made problem, man.

He says he's tired of seeing cars idling endlessly, inching along the bridge with the bike lane empty, or - if not empty - at least under-utilized.

Quite curiously, Google Maps seems to suggest that the BRIDGE never has bad congestion, but the highway leading up to the bridge (without bike lanes) is very congested during rush hour, beginning 4km away.

What's the deal with bike shops that don't have bike parking?

I've been to a few bike shops that don't have any bike racks outside. It's bizarre. Like, you have to bring your bike in the shop just to pick something up or to have a look around.

I'm not even talking about one place that does this, I have at least three in the area where there are no bike racks at all.

    Is this normal? Why???

www.baytoday.ca Those pesky enclosed mobility scooters: are they legal on roads?

What may look like miniature electric cars zipping through city streets are actually enclosed mobility scooters — and they’re not allowed to be there. The North Bay Police Service is now cracking down with fines.

Those pesky enclosed mobility scooters: are they legal on roads?

I've seen several of these around, on roads. And to be honest, if I had to replace my car, it might be for one of these!

But what the hell? They are ONLY allowed on sidewalks, which IMO, they really shouldn't be. And are NOT allowed on roads because they are classified as "pedestrians"?

We need new laws to accomodate and encourage the adoption of "mini cars" as car alternatives within urban and sububan travel..

This Cargo Bike Just Got a HUGE Upgrade | Urban Arrow FamilyNext

    Selling price approx. $12,500 Canadian.

Honestly, not bad when you consider the utility. Way cheaper than a second car, or as a replacement for a car that's rarely used.

I just worry that as these e-bikes get more complex, it just serves as an additional barrier for people.

Shower thought: Rather than traffic speed signs telling drivers how fast they are going, they should post what the consequence is for their current speed.

It might be more effective for the sign to read "4 points + $280 fine" instead of "80km/h" when you're in a 40km/h zone, no?

    Maybe I'm just imagining it....

I just filed a complaint with one of the local Regions about the horrific mess of debris in their marked, on-street bike lanes.

I even specifically asked if street sweepers are cleaning the bike lanes, or if they are just using them to dump road debris on.

I was told that because these roads are busy, debris ends up in the bike lanes. Fine, I can accept that.

    Except...

The same and similar stretches of road without bike lanes do NOT have this debris on it. It's quite literally only the bike lanes that do.

    For example:

    Bike lanes: ! !

And this just after the bike lane ends: !

This same example came up closer to the urban population:

Leading up to the bike lanes: !

Bike lane is just ahead: !

Road debris starts as soon as the bike lane starts, and gets worse as you continue. !

And magically disappear once the bike lane is no longer on the road: !

I've been on that route three times in the last year, and the conditions of the bike lanes has been exactly the same.

Just to point out, I've ridden on plenty of on-street bike lanes, as well as roads with urban and rural paved shoulders in other areas, and they don't exhibit this pattern of debris physics.

Yes, some places have bad bike lanes, but their shoulders are also a mess. This just doesn't seem to be the case here.

Was I just gaslit, bad luck, or does this seem like a massive coincidence spanning dozens of kilometres?

I guess they hate shoppers (context below)

A few weeks back, this grocery store set out these plant racks that essentially blocked the walkway, except for a small strip running parallel to the curb (only one person at a time could pass through, as you can see).

At that time, I helped a senior lady who was using a walker to get through it, because she could have easily fallen off the curb if the wheel slipped over the edge.

So I let the store management know that it was dangerous and they needed to give people more space.

Today, I noticed that they put a skid down, completely blocking the narrow path.

This forces people to walk between the plant racks, which is even more narrow. Coupled with the fact that some of the plants are put on the ground (lazy customers??), so you actually can't pass without some major maneuvering.

Someone at the store surely must realize how bad of an idea this is. Or is doing it out of spite.

And to make matters worse, behind where this photo is taken is plenty of open space to put those plant racks. I know this because there used to be a bike rack, but it was removed and never replaced... 😡

The best eyewear for bike commuting and urban cycling

I think Tom missed an even better option: photochromic cycling glasses.

I picked up a pair of Ryders Roam photochromic glasses when the company went out of business... $200+ glasses for like $30. Best purchase ever.

You can wear them at night, during sunny days, go from outdoor to indoor without taking them off (i.e running errands by bike), they are fairly anti-fog, sweat isn't an issue, rain isn't a problem. And I've worn them all-year-round because they offer awesome wind/cold/bug protection.

Invest in a good pair of photochromic cycling glasses and call it a day!

A reminder that DEET insect repellant will destroy your Lycra/technical apparel.

If you ride in during the summer (who doesn't???), there may be times when you're putting bug repellent spray on.

DEET-based products harm synthetic fabric, so opt for a DEET-free bug spray if you don't want any surprises.

I've used picaridin-based products, and they seem to work as good, if not better, than DEET.

What is it with websites restricting passwords to 8 - 16 characters? Is there some technical limitation to their system??

It's infuriating to create a "strong password" with letters, numbers, upper and lowercase, symbols, and non-repeating text... but it has to be only 8 to 16 characters long.

That's not a "strong" password, random characters or not.

Is there a limitation that somehow prevents these sites from allowing more than 16 characters?

I'm talking government websites, not just forums. It seems crazy to me.
