  • If you’re using likely and might, it’s just rose coloured glasses.

The freedom is going to make those issues WORSE.

We are already seeing it with how users use the mod log and previous comments as gotchas while ignoring the content. Reddit dealt with those issues and even had automated systems of dealing with these issues.

I’ve seen more posts derailed than stay on topic here, the lack of moderation is its own issue as things stew before they get dealt with as well. Then the mod just nukes everything as it’s easier. If they even do.

It’s the worst of everything and it’s barely holding on. Maybe it’s partly the instance I’m on, but there’s lots of posts with similar gripes I’ve seen as well.

  • Public mod logs I’ve seen been used for flaming users, I’ve yet to see it be used for what it was designed for.

It’s great in theory, but without proper logging or context, people just glance at the logs, see the bans and/pr removals and flames the user. Which is against the rules! If you’re using it for that, just don’t engage, but people would rather try and use it as a gotcha. While missing context 100% of the time.

If you can’t engage the user and need to usr a public log to launch an ad hominem attack instead of trying to engage the topic, you’re the issue with Lemmy. And this is what the logs are used for unfortunately.

And as stated, the fact that a mod can just encore stuff out of spite (happens) and they don’t even need to provide a reason, or a notice to the user. So they don’t even know they goofed most times.

  • Makes sense, and yes It’s not copyright on the bottoms my bad.

I guess the confusing thing is, I always assumed the spine was the current publisher, so why Fawcett, instead of Ballentine.

And in the end it’s saying this is based on the first edition of Fawcetts? Would there be any printings from their later editions? Not asking about in general as I assume it’s per book, but for this one specifically do you know?

The edition printing is hard enough to figure out sometimes -.- no standard system and sometimes they just randomize the numbers for fun!

  • Hrmm, I’ve got a good selection of short story compilations, I’ll have to see if her name pops up on any. My last collection spree I grabbed a bunch of I think it was “Hugo” winners? I’ll check when I get home though. Know if she made any winner lists?

I like using the short story compilations and finding authors, it’s how I selected Asimov, Heinlein and Silverburg so far. I’ve also got some of their compilations they’ve done since they are named.

I feel like Asimov is cheating since he had his own publication journal. Lots of lists he’s made.

  • Ah! I was telling my brother how Heinlein couldn’t seem to complete a thought without going on a tangent. But for CHAPTERS! Hah I love it.

I’ve noticed this is kinda common in scifi, it’s a chance for people to bloviate about their profession or hobby. So yeah there’s a lot of side quests.

  • The incest is heavy at then start, and the pedo has kinda maybe been there in his previous writing? He seems to like the “smaller” and more “meek” women in his stories, but I’ve only read a few so far.

Basically it’s a father daughter and two other people who almost had a thing, and they don’t care about flaunting stuff around.

And Deety has stated she wouldn’t have turned her Pop down.

  • I’m not minding it, I mainly read old scifi, and the light it shines on how things were and what they thought of the future is what fancy’s me. I’ve read a couple other of his books, but they were more fantasy and I don’t think I like those. I like “space” in my stories.

I see Friday came out after, I’ll have to through that into my look for pile.

The other interesting thing is the terms they use and how they aren’t PC anymore. Lots of R words thrown out back then.

Don’t know if it matters, but I was born in 89 so interesting to see a “lens” into the past if that makes any sense…

  • I had a similar typo in one of my books, typo was a character name and took me a minute to figure out what the issue is.

I can’t recall that one off the top of my head though, I share them with my brother, so I would have an image of it SOMEWHERE.

  • Oh jeez, makes you curious how something like that is able to happen.

I don’t know when computers took over typewriting for manuscripts and typesetting, but at some point some stuff just shouldn’t happen.

  • I honestly don’t know the printing, it’s confusing me. It says both Fawcett and Ballentine, first edition, with a copyright of both 80 and 82, but the spine says fawcett, which is the earlier printing.

But to answer the question, chapter 22 pages 194-195.

  • Books @lemmy.world

    What's the weirdest typo/error you've seen in a book?

  • Move your foot from the brake to the gas and steer out of the way…? Same way you would move for emergency vehicles. Which is another reason to pay attention to the road.

How is this even a question lmfao.

  • That’s obviously something that’s impossible to happen.

If you think that neither of those are possible, or countless others… you’re a hazard on the road. There is absolutely no reason to use your phone while stopped, anything can happen, and you won’t notice while you’re sending that text.

The life of you or someone else isn’t more important than whatever is on your phone.

You seem to think getting rear ended while stopped at a light is an impossibility… that’s clearly not true and there’s plenty of statistics to support this is entirely possible and does happen. Now, you can also avoid the collision if you’re paying attention and have space. But obviously that can’t happen if you’re too preoccupied with your phone, instead of the road. Like you’re supposed to. At all times.

  • Do you think being stopped means it’s safe to use your phone behind the wheel?

How are you supposed to make an evasive maneuver if the car behind you can’t stop? Or if someone starts crossing the road and is now laying on the road from falling?
