The Supreme Court rejects a nationwide opioid settlement with OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma
  • I'm torn on this one. Obviously, the victims deserve to get payment and whatnot, but the other half of this is that the bankruptcy court agreement with the Sackler family would prevent them from future liability for similar cases. Supreme Court is saying the bankruptcy court didn't have the power to grant that, which, if excluded, would open the Sacklers to future lawsuits. I'm all for that family getting sued into oblivion, but we can't trust the Supreme Court to do what's right either. We have to treat everything they do with suspicion. This comes on the heels of the ruling of 'bribery is now basically legal', so it makes me wonder how much the Sackler family is paying them.

  • Well that's depressing
  • I've played since day one and I don't even remember it being a requirement. Fortunately, Sony has reversed course. Hopefully things return to normal over the next few days.

  • Well that's depressing
  • From what I've read, Arrowhead doesn't control selling the game, Sony does. So it's on Sony's head for selling the game in regions that don't have PSN access, knowing that account linking would be a requirement even though it was temporarily disabled. The whole situation is a complete clusterfuck.

  • Only five bodies delivered to Belgorod morgue after mysterious Russian plane crash, Ukrainian intelligence suggests
  • And/or give them cause to not turn over the POW's since they are already 'dead'. Hopefully more details will emerge that paint a better picture. No matter the case though, if the POW's are still alive, then this certainly seals their fate anyway as Russia isn't going to turn around and hand them over after all this.

  • Texas Governor Greg Abbott releases letter stating Federal Government has broken compact with the states, activates Texas National Guard
  • Abbot is full of shit, as always.

    From his letter:

Biden has ignored Texas demand that he perform his constitutional duties...thosnrefusalbtonprotect the States has inflicted unprecedented harm on the People alll across the United States>

No proof of damage except the 'I dont like brown people' that's typical of republicans. I don't recall Texas saying shit when Trump abandoned his constitutional duties to promote the general welfare of the public and let large swaths of Americans die to covid, just because he didn't want to hurt his election chances. Pretty sure that's precedent, though Abbot claims Biden's damage is unprecedented.

This whole document is to rattle supporters into a frenzy. Fuck Abbot.

  • Experts on why so many Republicans accept that "God gave us Trump"
  • Doesn't help that churches are pushing political ideologies onto their flocks. Granted, those churchgoers probably already held Trump in high regard thanks to years of brainwashing from Fox. Trump meets all the decriptions of the antichrist and they follow him without a question asked. Religious nutjobs are frightening.

  • Protective case or not?
  • Yes and no. When I got my OLED is was so light but after a JSAUX modcase, it sort of lost that feeling. That said, I'm all for protecting my devices and I have a toddler, so that's me.

When I purchased the original Deck, I had it sitting on my desk in my garage with some headphones plugged in and my dog, who was under the desk, got up and bumped the cable with her head. The cable startled her, causing her to panic and jolt, catching the cable around her torso, and yanking the Steam deck off the desk. Dog is now in a panic as the flying Steam Deck crashes into the cement floor behind her, bouncing and skittering across the ground about 6ft or so until it came to a rest. Now, all of this happened in llike 2 seconds, so there wasn't much I could do. It was basically new out of the box, but it took that incident without issue. That was a a few scrapes along the back/side, but no damage to anything else. Has run fine since.

All that to say that it's tanky in its own right, but your mileage may vary. I lucked out I think, but even a case won't save the screen from an ill placed drop onto a rock or something like that.

  • Texas teacher fired for reading Diary of Anne Frank to class.
  • I know Texas is backwards and regressive, but this headline is kinda clickbait.

A Texas middle school teacher has been fired after assigning an unapproved illustrated version of Anne Frank's Diary to her eighth grade reading class.

...While district officials claim the adaptation of Anne Frank's Diary was not approved, it was included on a reading list sent to parents at the start of the school year, KFDM reports. The investigation will determine if the teacher pivoted from the original approved curriculum or if administrators were aware of the book being part of the class.

She wasn't fired for reading Anne Frank, but for using a graphic novelization of it.

  • Biden says Supreme Court 'misinterpreted the Constitution' in rejecting student loan relief
  • That's what Republicans are counting on. That way they can point and say "Look at how bad things are due to the Democrats" and the uninformed or ignorant get in line to vote R. This is another case by an illegitimate and hyper partisan SCOTUS.

  • Amazon cancels my account after exposing account lockout for "racist doorbell"
  • I have smart home devices, luke a doorbell, but I limit all traffic on them to be local network traffic only. No random requests or connections to outside servers and if I need to access it away from home I jump on a VPN. Not a solution for everyone, but it gives you a lot more control over your devices.

  • TechCrunch shouted out Lemmy and Kbin in their Reddit coverage today: Reddit CEO lashes out on protests, moderators and third-party apps
  • If I recall the Apollo dev's comments, he said someone from Twitter told him that the pricing was designed to kill third party apps in the same way Twitter killed them. The pricing is doing exactly what was intended and has nothing to do with the API costs to Reddit.
