Everett True on parenting styles (unknown date)
  • "We have morning reports of an Outburst on the corner of Canal and Main with several casualties and extensive structural damage. The public is advised that Everett is forecast to be active around his office on the 300 block of Broadway. Illustrators are hard at work and we'll have a full update in the evening edition."

  • Hmmm.... I think you're right. It indeed seems to be an example of the Henpecked Husband trope where the joke is that he terrorises the town but in his own house she is queen. But I think there's also a civilizing element in that it shows Everett being restrained by his wife, who is represented as the responsible center of the family and home. So in a sense, Everett is a good guy because he backs down and does not go against family/home. In the strict male/female role dichotomy of the time, just as Everett outbursts against societal forces that oppress everyday man, so does Mrs True outburst against societal forces (represented by Everett, since he's the center of the strip) that oppress everyday woman.

I'm still a little uneasy about the double standard that women can't be abusers, and the fact that Mrs True is stuck in the gender roles of her time, but at least the strip attempts to consider the perspective of the women who are stuck in those roles.

  • This one got me thinking:

    1. Everett hits various people who annoy him. This is easy to laugh at because it's an exaggerated (and thus comedic) take on everyday annoyances or systemic oppresions.
    2. Everett doesn't hit his wife or his kids, as far as I've seen. This is good because it would be "crossing the line" and no longer comedic.
    3. Everett's wife hits him. This is starting to bug me. It kind of implies that guys can't be physically abused, because showing them getting hit by their partner isn't "crossing the line." This seems wrong, though.

I'm not sure, does anyone else have an opinion on this?

  • I was expecting to start the batton running, and pass it off to the next idea, or the continuation of the idea.

I think I see what you're saying. Lemmy is indeed a place where it's very easy to get involved, and people get involved in different ways. A lot of us just pick a community and start posting regularly. Some of us adopt dormant communities and bring them back to life. Others contribute by becoming mods or admins or setting up their own instances or debugging/coding. Even those people who were giving you reasons why the "transfer your account easily" project was difficult, they were helping you by telling you the challenges involved. Whenever a well-run project is started, you think about the hurdles, risks, and mitigations, then integrate those into your project plan.

I encourage you to keep getting involved. The trick is to find the right level of involvement for you, then sticking with it and seeing it through.

  • Lemmy total number of users last month (very close to 1.5 M users)
  • What I do to get around that is: subscribe to communities that are not memes, news, or tech, then read new posts by "subscribed" and "scaled". When I run out of those, read "all" to find new communities to subscribe to.

Posting to Lemmy and specifying thumbnails?

Hi there, I was posting on !fullmoviesonyoutube@lemm.ee for a while, and I'd post links to youtube videos, and it'd automatically make thumbnails so that was cool.

But then "something changed" and it no longer made thumbnails, at least when seen on the web interface. But sometimes it does? The following image shows an example. In the first post, it has no thumbnail but in the second case it does:

    !

MY QUESTION: how do make a Lemmy post to a video (especially on youtube) such that the post includes a thumbnail?

    • Either automatically-generated, or custom-made by me.
    • Preferrably via a computer client rather than phone.
