What does a world without Airbnb look like?
  • Why do people hate on Aribnb so much? I mean I don't like what they're doing to the housing market, yes, they're inflating housing prices by reducing the incentive to sell, and there's a housing crisis basically everywhere right now. But the product itself is quite good. It may be the largest one but there are still competitors, and the prices are typically far cheaper than a hotel. When I look at e.g. Croatia and the coastline, on Šolta for example you literally have a single hotel that's wildly expensive, or short term rentals. I know I'd definitely never go for the hotel personally.

Also I don't get the "tech bros solving nonexistent problems argument". Like sure, technically you could do it yourself without the website, but that's like saying that why would anyone make a flight aggregate site or Ebay. Those things are possible via other methods, but this makes it far easier.

Like I legitimately want to know what people's problems are with the actual product, cuz from my perspective it's pretty good. I agree that it perpetuates overarching problems like overturism or the housing crisis, but I'm talking about the app and service itself which a lot of people here seem to have a problem with.

  • I can see your rule from space
  • I'm pretty sure spy satellites do have even greater resolution, only thing is that you're not gonna use something like that for a map view and it would be very inefficient, since those satellites certainly don't have the same field of view and would take a lot longer to scan the appropriate area, and are limited in number.

  • Anon thinks about Google
  • I mean, a lot of the points are valid, but the Pixel phones are pretty great, Android is pretty great and getting better, and the Chromebook gamble is playing a really long term game where they could end up uprooting Microsoft if they play their cards right. From my understanding, US kids now on average know Chromebook OS better than Windows by far, and will probably prefer to continue using it if they could. If Google makes the OS more viable for professional use and flexible and play their cards right, they'd have a really good chance at uppending Microsoft's dominance, especially since Microsoft is seemingly trying to shoot itself in the foot with Windows.

  • Mozilla roll out first AI features in Firefox Nightly
  • Honestly, the worst part of the AI craze is that so many people hear AI now and immediately hate it even though it can really do some amazing stuff, e.g. in medicine. AI as a blanket term just has so much variance, there's a ton of trash and a ton of great stuff.

  • YSK: You don't need Gmail to create a Google account
  • I mean if you make a gmail account just for your Google account, you'll either have to log into your Gmail account to check emails or miss potential important emails related to your account, which you would get if they were sent to your main email.

  • ACAB.
  • How are you gonna slash their budget if you add so many requirements and remove benefits? By default that will mean there will be less interest in being a cop, which means you'll have to offer a quite substantial increase in pay to compensate. And in most places there already is a shortage of cops.

  • Do you prefer Gaming PCS or Gaming Laptops?
  • Well I personally need my laptop for collage as well. And it comes in handy if it has a powerful GPU if I need to do anything more intensive on it (e.g. machine learning or game dev). Steam Deck wouldn't really be adequate there. And even if it wasn't for my usecase (which isn't representative of every student), most students will probably still need a laptop to bring with themselves sometimes to collage, and if they also want to game, makes sense to buy a gaming laptop instead of a gaming PC + a regular laptop.

  • Do you prefer Gaming PCS or Gaming Laptops?
  • When I get a job and settle down, I definitely plan on getting a PC. It just has so much more bang for the buck, and you can actually use the entire performance. My laptop basically overheats immediately if there's an intense load on it, even though it has the raw power to actually run it. But the reality is that currently, as a student, a gaming laptop is a lot more practical to me.

  • Apple AI vs. Microsoft AI
  • To add to that, apart from the Apple cloud processing, data can be sent to OpenAI if a prompt is deemed too complex, but even then you're asked whether or not you want it to talk to OpenAI's servers each time, and apparently OpenAI isn't allowed to store any of that data, tho idk how much I'd trust that part.

They also claim that whenever data is sent off device, only the data directly relevant to the prompt is sent.

  • Disaster is nearing. Mass displacement. Mass starvation. Mass death. It is all imminent. Do you understand?
  • Boats are actually one of the most efficient and scalable methods of transport. Sure they produce a lot of emissions, but it's still very small in the context of global emissions (2.5%) and are an invaluable asset. There are many other things you should go after before shipping.

  • Payday 3 gameplay trailer just dropped and the release date is September 21st
