Not on Lemmy. See, most people on Lemmy seem to think that every thing is doom and gloom and politics. So if they see an article that has nothing to with fighting against fascists, or fighting capitalism, or complaining about rich people (tho lemmy posters are usually earn a salary MUCH more than the average US citizen), then they downvote because it's not gloomy enough.

So celeb news or weddings or something like that, don't fit in with their daily rage-hate dopamine hit, so they downvote. And report. Yes, report. I am the mod of this comm and I have gotten reports sent to me saying that it's not "news" and that "Lemmy is the wrong audience."

But it's my community and I can post whatever I want, and will continue to do so.

Thank you for your question though. Because you're right. A wedding should be celebrated and a small break from doom-and-gloom news is actually fun.

I like the police and support my local police force by volunteering there several times a month. In fact, they helped me report some Lemmy posts that advocated violence against local officials, to the appropriate FBI offices. I've reported a lot of Lemmy posts to the FBI, lol

But what happened in this article is horrible and I hope they all face legal repurcussions.

This is my news community, not yours. You don't get to show up and decide what qualifies as news here or lecture people on what they should find important. The news I posted fits within the guidelines posted in the community sidebar.

Nobody claimed a celebrity story is as serious as civil rights or wage theft. That's a strawman you built so you could feel morally superior while gatekeeping other people's posts. News communities have always included a mix. If you only want hard news, go make your own sub instead of policing this one. Be the change you wanna see, brother. :)
