  • Black Desert free on Steam 'til 10 Jun
  • Technically correct, but what they call a "free trial" is effectively a sizable free tier of the game. The entire base game as well as the first two expansion can be played for free with no time restrictions.

  • Should a drawing that was made using AI references be marked as "AI Generated Content"?
  • I think it should be marked under the same conditions in which you would credit another artist on whose drawings your work is based on. Is it a close reproduction of an AI-generated piece? You should mark it as AI-assisted. Did you use AI-generated content as general inspiration to create your own unique artwork? No need to mark it in that case.

  • ECI website is overloaded as we're only a few thousand signatures away
  • The thing is, it would be far from the first time for fans of certain Internet personalities to manipulate petitions or polls on a massive scale. Yes, there has been a lot of genuine new support for the campaign, but I'm not sure I trust that there wasn't quite a bit of botting as well, especially with how many new signatures there were even during late night and early morning hours. It's unfortunately also quite trivial for some countries (like Germany) to enter fake signatures. Even without coordinated botting, I'm sure there were for example some Americans who saw how easy it was to enter a random name and did just that.

I'm really happy about the support the campaign received but I think that, realistically, we're not over the finish line yet and have to keep campaigning for more signatures over the next few weeks.

    Edit: Seems Ross agrees

  • What do you guys think of freedom of speach in 2025s internet?
  • Freedom of speech is often confused with a right to say what you want on any platform, but it's not the same. As long as you can host your own website, say whatever you want on it and have the website be accessible to other people, there is freedom of speech on the internet. That's not the case in all countries, but in many it is. But getting banned on Twitter for writing "cisgender" or getting your post removed on Lemmy doesn't really touch your free speech whatsoever.

  • ECI website is overloaded as we're only a few thousand signatures away
  • The petition (along with the Pirate Software drama) has recently been covered by quite a few very popular content creators like MoistCritikal, Asmongold and Pewdiepie. I think that made a lot of difference, as their videos on the topic have millions of views.

  • Upcoming First Party Games by Nintendo - 2025-07
  • Metroid seems like a prime holiday release.

Maybe Hyrule Warriors in september and Air Riders in november. But we've seen so little of Air Riders that I wouldn't be surprised if it gets delayed.

  • ECI website is overloaded as we're only a few thousand signatures away
  • I just hope it's natural traffic and not a ton of bots. The recent acceleration in signatures has been great to see, but also a bit... suspicious. In any case we should keep collecting as many signatures as possible after the million, as there will undoubtedly be fake/invalid signatures that will be filtered out at the end.

  • 8BitDo announces its controllers now have Steam (SteamOS) compatibility
  • Their settings are adjusted on a firmware bases by pressing different buttons together on the controller.

That's also the case on newer 8bitdo controllers to be fair. You don't have to use the software often but when you do, it's indeed a pain.

  • 8BitDo announces its controllers now have Steam (SteamOS) compatibility
  • Yes, proprietary software on Windows or Android. It gets even more "fun" though, as you need to use different software for different controllers. The "8bitdo Firmware updater" works for controller like the Pro 2, but if for example you have the Ultimate 2 you need the "8Bitdo Ultimate Software 2" instead. That thing will also crash if you have any other 8bitdo device plugged in. So yeah.

  • Furukawa's Defence Of Game-Key Cards Ain't All That Convincing | Nintendo Life
  • I could see the argument for large file sizes, but tiny games like Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 also get released as key cards. I could see the argument for key cards being an improved replacement for "download code in a box" releases, but those are still a thing on Switch 2 regardless.

  • 8BitDo announces its controllers now have Steam (SteamOS) compatibility
  • The 8bitdo Ultimate 2 is pretty close to an XBox controller and it has a gyro. The problem is that while the gyro works great on Switch, it's severely limited on PC, as it can only emulate the right stick with very few settings. The Steam Input update could potentially fix that, but I haven't tested it yet.

  • 8BitDo announces its controllers now have Steam (SteamOS) compatibility
  • I have 3 of their controllers. All excellent hardware-wise but a bit shit when it comes to their software. Don't think you'll even be able to do this firmware update on Linux. Curious to see how well the Steam Input support works in any case, especially whether it includes gyro.

  • Tackling "Nicole" Spam

So I'm sure some of you have also gotten the spam DMs supposedly from "Nicole, the fediverse chick". She is notorious enough across Lemmy to even have her own community now. I think I've gotten like 6 Nicole DMs. While those may seem amusing on their own, there is the worrying suggestion that they might actually be a deanonymization attack. In light of that possibility, are there any measures the admins here could consider to prevent this kind of attack from happening? Other instances' solutions include for example rehosting external embedded images, filtering out external images from DMs entirely or trying to implement filters for preventing spam DMs from being sent. Especially one of the former two solutions would in my opinion be quite good options to protect the privacy of pawb.social users.

How does Federation of Accounts work on Pixelfed?

I've started to get into Pixelfed these past 2 weeks but one thing I don't quite understand yet, is what content is getting federated and what isn't. Under "Discover" I can see some trending posts from other instances but most are from the one I'm on and most have barely any interactions in terms of comments etc. I'm a bit surprised, as it's supposedly bigger than Lemmy now but I can see much less content and interactions than on Lemmy. So am I actually getting all the content from instances my instance is federated with, or is it maybe just the specific accounts being followed by members of my instance? And are interactions like hearts getting federated or are they just local?

My introduction to Linux Gaming: The GP2X

I feel like the Linux Handhelds made by GPH in the 2000s are a nowadays almost forgotten piece of history, even though they were in some ways the predecessor to today's Steam Deck. So I wanted to create a bit of an appreciation post for this chapter in Linux Gaming history. Did any of you use a GP2X back in the day as well? For me, it wasn't just my introduction to Linux gaming, but also game development, as I programmed my first games for it using GLBasic. It was a fantastic machine for emulation as well, got introduced to many old games from the 80s and 90s through it.

New Motherboard with loose CMOS Battery - Should I worry/return?

I'm currently waiting for all the components for my PC upgrade to arrive. Got the motherboard today and immediately upon opening, I noticed that the CMOS battery was not in its slot but just kind of next to it loose on top of the board. The slot seems fine, it seems to fit securely in there. No scratches on the board either. But now I'm a bit worried - could the battery have shorted something on the motherboard? It holds a charge after all. What do you think - should I return it for a new one untested or are the chances of the battery harming anything so miniscule that I should just go for it and use it in my build?

Games that support the Deck's multitouch

The Steam Deck's multitouch screen might be its most underutilised feature. Until recently, I wasn't even sure whether devs could use it for anything more than simple mouse emulation. But I've just started playing "Sky: Children of the Light" on my Deck (which is generally a great experience on Deck, especially on the OLED with 90Hz HDR) and I found that when using a musical instrument, you can actually use the touchscreen to play up to 10 notes at the same time.

This got me curious: Do you know if there are any other games on Deck using multitouch, or is Sky the first one that does it?

Latest consensus is that YouTube performance issues seem to be Adblock Plus' fault.

That would explain why I didn't have any problems with Youtube and uBlock Origin.

    Federation issues with feddit.de?

I've noticed that Pawb no longer seems to receive any new posts from any feddit.de communities. For example, if I view the "DACH" community through Pawb, the latest post is from 7 days ago, while on feddit itself, there were many posts in the last 7 days. Both instances still seem to be federated and aren't on each other's blocklists. Any idea what is happening here?

    Can't reply to kbin accounts

Hi everyone! I've noticed for a while now that I can't reply to comments made by kbin accounts using my account here. Not even talking about kbin threads, but for example if I reply to any kbin-made comment over on feddit.de, once I click submit it just keeps spinning without ever posting the reply. I often see users from other lemmy instances replying to them though, so it doesn't seem like a general lemmy problem. Does everyone else here have this problem as well?
