Americans are tipping less than they have in years
  • The person you're arguing with is on the Canadian instance, so likely living in Canada, where servers are paid real wages, not $2.75 or whatever. (If the real wages still aren't enough to live on, then Canada should probably be raising the minimum wage, rather than tipping a small percentage of their minimum wage workers.)

  • Thousands of Los Angeles homeowners were dropped by their insurers before the Palisades Fire
  • What? How is it a property grab if no one can live there? Only the stupidest and/or richest people would buy an uninsurable home. You can't get a mortgage without insurance, because the banks want to make sure they still have an asset to repossess if you default. Even if you were that rich, why would you throw your money away on something that will almost certainly be destroyed, sooner rather than later, without a way to recoup any of the cost? If a company like Zillow comes in and snaps up all the uninsurable homes in these regions, they'll be declaring bankruptcy within 5 years.

  • The rules are made up and the points don't matter
  • They are and they do, but this example is extreme. Having been on both sides of this, I'd say no one should have to live their life in fear of every little interaction. It's exhausting, and you will never succeed in getting every person to leave you alone anyway. But this doesn't have to be "the way it is." You can actually change and make your life easier. Sometimes it takes help and a long time, but I believe most people can do it if they really want to.

  • All passengers will be forced to use digital boarding passes by 2030, predicts airline chief
  • But with digital boarding passes, they can get access to your entire phone. Last time I flew, I tried scanning my digital boarding pass at TSA. The guy stops me and basically just takes my phone to do it himself. I was trying to watch what he was doing with it, but he was sitting behind a terminal. When he handed the phone back, the web browser was open, showing my phone carrier's website, instead of my boarding pass like it was when I handed it to him. There's a small chance it could have been accidental, but if not, I don't know what he was trying to access or why. Very unsettling.

  • Thai hippie sushi rolls
  • It can be a ton of work. Seasoning the rice properly, creating different fillings and also a variety of sauces, and then rolling and slicing the rolls neatly (the hardest part - if you don't have a sharp knife, like don't even try). If you're like me, you end up with a huge mess. It does get a little easier every time, but it is much harder than it looks at first. You'll easily spend half a day in the kitchen, unless you somehow have everything already on hand.

  • Do you have a Christmas meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) with your friends and family? If so, how was your experience this year?
  • You win, lol. That's terrible.

My mom used to be a great cook but now she just makes everything in the microwave, often in plastic containers. This year she seemed to forget half the things she was going to cook. We had plans to make beignets and homemade eggnog (we didn't). For Christmas dinner she made this elaborate meal plan and then changed everything at the last minute. She somehow didn't think about starting the rice until the chicken was done cooking... then suggested we have nasty precooked pouch rice. For Christmas dinner. It would be different if she didn't cook much or know how, but cooking is her whole thing! I'm honestly baffled. I've decided I'm just going to volunteer to cook the entire dinner next time. I've been a professional cook before. I can make something fancy, even if I'm the only one who will appreciate it.

  • Please help resolve a disagreement in our home
  • If you already have a maxed out sharps drawer, then you probably don't actually need any of the knives in this drawer. Like how often do you actually use the pizza cutter? I just cut pizza with a chef knife. Or the egg cutter? How often is that used? Sometimes the answer is to go through all your drawers and see what can be tossed to make space for the things you actually do use.

  • relationships and fear of abandonment
  • This might not be what you want to hear, but you're right. People will come and go from your life in ways you don't have any control over. The only person who will never leave you is you. So, be a friend to yourself! You don't have to be your only friend, but once you have a solid foundation of being ok with just yourself, you won't need to depend on others as much. You'll be better able to enjoy their company without worrying about being abandoned. It won't hurt as much when friends leave, whether it's intentional or just a result of changing circumstances. Of course, this is not an easy thing to just do. As others have recommended, a therapist could possibly help you with this.

I've been in the same situation you describe, and it's taken more than a decade (and me having a complete breakdown and him still not leaving me even though I was a complete mess) for me to finally believe it. I'm guessing you may have had someone in your childhood who told you they cared about you, but their actions later revealed they actually didn't. Exploring those feelings - the real abandonment you did experience - can help you heal and separate current and future experiences from the past.

  • Can't think of what to do, hence scrolling
  • Yeah the problem with scrolling is that it's designed to keep you scrolling. You could put on a TV show instead. Either you'll get sucked in and watch it or you'll get bored and want to do something else. As long as you don't get stuck scrolling, you can decide what you'd rather do.
