Indubitably - I have been fairly resistant to that but sadly (to me) it seems a question now of when I get time to research it, not if:-|. It's been a minute/decade since I was my own captain though, and I don't want to pay for a proxy service, and I'd want to see if there are Android solutions that are safe, and so on. In the meantime, I'm just 1-2-3-ing my way around, bumming my way on other people's rides:-).

I find that I am LOSING shows that I used to enjoy, now that Disney+ and Paramount+ and whatever are gate-keeping them.

But yes, there is indeed a ton of lower-quality shows lining up to take their place...

I get spam calls ofc, but I have never once gotten such a text. I have also never donated to a political entity, for precisely this reason. It looks like your number got put onto a list somewhere and people are just passing it around like candy.

I tried 3 times to change it to OpenSesame!123 as the picture instructed, but it kept saying "cannot reuse existing password". I was thinking to wait and hour and try again. After that, I'll give up and use something new. I was thinking either "God", "Love", "password", or "secret" - something really easy for me to remember. :-P

Indeed, people are quite a bit more welcoming here than Reddit - ofc not everywhere, but more so, on average. If it helps, you can block not only individual users communities, but even whole entire instances - the latter by going into your profile, scrolling way down, and adding the instance name to that list. Do what you want, but for me, when TENS of people continue to spam-reply me WEEKS after I STOP responding, that's the signal that they are refusing to control themselves, so I take matters into my own hands and block them. For that reason I blocked hexbear and lemmygradml, and some people block lemmyml too but I do enjoy their memes and such and just stay out of their politics community so I have not gone that far for that one. If this describes you, note that this can improve your experience in the Fediverse by perhaps 90% so may be WORTH IT. People from those instances can still reply to your posts and comments, but you will not receive notifications anymore, nor see them while you are logged in:-).

One thing more I wanted to make sure that you and your friends know: DMs are not private. I don't know of any actual tools that makes reading someone's DMs possible, but the signals are out there and not only admins but anyone could, in theory. Probably that won't matter 99% of the time but e.g. sending physical addresses or phone numbers would be easy to scan for across the Fediverse by malicious actors.

In bacteria iirc these concepts still exist - mostly - though there is definitely a Ship of Theseus argument that could be made there.

For viruses though, woah! Literal chimeras exist with like the head from one source, the body from another, and perhaps the tail from still another. After all, why not? They are just functional nanoparticles, and on an evolutionary timescale of billions of years, pretty much anything that can be done will have been tried, multiple times.

These concepts are still practically useful though - well, as much as any concept is, given how the entire field of biology exists in a more or less fluid state. Literally the only law there is Virchow's stating that all cells come from previously-existing cells (by division), and that one even entirely on its face has to be false b/c what about "the first cell"?

Likewise the central dogma that information flows from DNA through RNA to protein has been proven false so many times it is ridiculous. Nowadays we know that it sometimes goes backwards, or skips steps, or both - e.g. proteins straight-up manufacture DNA from scratch (telomerases), or like proteins can make other proteins (not just prion conversion!).

Biology is... weird. It is definitely not just physics, or even chemistry, enacted on a larger scale - it's on a WHOLE. NOTHER. LEVEL!:-P
