Weekly what have you been playing discussion - week of September 16th, 2024
  • Nice. Of the classic Yakuza games I liked 4 the best, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

I will just mention some of the games I played from the genres you like. They are all pretty well known, so you probably played them already or have them on your list.

Puzzles: Does Turn Based Combat count as puzzles? Tactical Breach Wizards and Into the Breach (A rogue like, but it is sooo good).

Platformers: Celeste, Horace, Dustforce and Little Nightmares

    Metroidvanias: Guacamelee

Point and Click: Everything by Wadjet Eye Games. Seriously, everything they developed or published.

Story aka Walking Simulators: The Suicide of Rachel Foster, Firewatch, The Beginner's Guide, Dr. Langeskov (It's free!), Jazzpunk, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

  • +1 for Yakuza. I hope you have played 0, Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2 before 3.

What genre of indies are you looking for?

  • The rerelease of Doom 1.

This time with Pistol Start, as I recently learned that the levels were balanced around that. It is challenging, but feels so right. The beginning of a level often plays like a little puzzle. Who to kill in what order to get to a decent weapon, before your 50 pistol shots run out. Can’t wait to play the new semi-official expansion they added with the rerelease.

  • In what videogame you're currently stuck and you gave up or drop it for a while?
  • Lost Judgment. I can't for the life of me bring myself to keep going. The first one was kind of a drag already, but man, the addition of all the High School drama and dancing did not make it any better. The premise of the big case you are trying to solve is quite interesting, but everything around it is so bad.

I've already spent 30 hours on it and there are at least 50 more waiting for me. I don't think I can do it.

  • Happy National Video Game Day Everyone!
  • Some good old Doom 1.

I played through 1 and 2 about two years ago, but I wanted to try the recent rerelease. Like last time, I play on Ultra Violence. This time with Pistol Start though, as I recently learned that the levels were balanced around that. It is challenging, but feels so right. The beginning of a level often plays like a little puzzle. Who to kill in what order to get to a decent weapon, before your 50 pistol shots run out. Can't wait to play the new semi-official expansion they added with the rerelease.

  • Ordered that book two days ago. So excited for it and the upcoming remaster of BS1.

  • What's your favourite game made for a handheld console?
  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP was pretty great.

  • What characterises the musical style of the 2020s, 2010s and 2000s?
  • 2000s - The rise and fall of Nu Metal, at least in my country.

  • Favourite FPS Campaign
  • You should really give the Wolfenstein games a try if you already own them. After about an hour or two you will know if the game is for you. Start with New Order.

There is no melee weapon in Prey, except the wrench you start with. It is a Sci-Fi game, set on a space station. The focus is on finding your own solutions to problems by using different skills you unlock. Strength, hacking, stealth and so on. It is an immersive sim, but you can play it like a shooter too. It demands some attention though, or you will not know what to do next.

Turbo Overkill has multiple levels you complete one after another. It is a classic FPS game with a campaign. The big fights happen in large arenas though. The game is very fast and you have to use a lot of different movement abilities to survive on harder difficulties.

  • Favourite FPS Campaign
  • Can't decide.

"Wolfenstein: The New Order" for the setting and production value.

"Prey" (2017) for the fantastic gameplay and atmosphere.

"Turbo Overkill" for the movement and variety.

  • [Discussion] James Cameron hands you the Terminator franchise. What do you do with it?
  • Yea. that is pretty much what I had in mind. A huge persistent battlefield with an ever changing frontline. Players who fail the time travel missions lose their character, but succeeding sents equipment or units to the future or hinders Skynet in some way.

  • [Discussion] James Cameron hands you the Terminator franchise. What do you do with it?
  • A video game. Terminator crossed with Helldivers, set on a big open battlefield in the future.

The resistance is controlled by the players, AI controls the machines. Players can conquer time machines to go back in time. There they clear small side missions to change the battlefield in the future.

    Access to the playtest

If I understand correctly, the only way to access the playtest is by getting an invite through Steam from someone who already has access.

So, simple question. Will someone be so kind to invite me?

Maybe we can turn this thread into a general thread for requests like mine. I am sure there are many folks out there who would like to play.
