  • Ya that makes sense but looking it up that doesn't seem to be a major source of wind and I don't know why not. Probably has an effect but is order of magnitudes weaker than solar heating and Coriolis effect (which having looked it up seems to be the #2 cause of wind).

  • Typically wind is dissipated by friction losses with the surface I think (bleeding off speed and energy by making waves, waving trees, and just rubbing against the ground) and wind is generated by heat from the sun (warm air expanding pushing against cold air, creating pressure differentials across thousands of miles).

Because wind is quick to regenerate and this does nothing to stop that the result is probably a pretty small drop in average wind speeds around the new mill and no greater ramifications than slightly less pollen travel in the spring.

  • I'd toss a few stitches in there to pull it back together as you say, except I would probably try to use as many stitches as I could in the space to more evenly distribute the force around the hole. I'm not very experienced at mending stuff though so if someone else comes in and says something else trust them instead.

I love to see people fixing cool stuff though so good luck with an easy and effective repair, my friend!

  • No, the adjuster clips (the brass metal bits in the middle) are not like that. The suspender strap (the cloth) on each side is not two different pieces of fabric held together by the adjuster clip in the middle. It is one piece of material and the adjuster clip is not a metal ring, it is an adjustable clip that moves up and down the strap.

There is a D ring like how the adjuster clip is shown, but that part goes right above the attachment point on the pants (be it attached by clips, trigger snaps, button braces, or belt hooks). The d ring is used to loop the strap back up to the underside of the adjuster clip so that when you move the adjuster clip up it shortens the suspenders and the adjuster clip holds short.

The drawing is also a bit odd because the attachment mechanism is drawn as a narrow metal element which makes it kind of look like a trigger snap but hook onto either the belt loops of the pants or onto suspender hooks built into the inside of the waist of the pants so they wouldn't be where they are positioned. They are positioned like clip suspenders (most common type, probably what the artist is most familiar with anyway) but the ends would probably be wider and stubbier if they were. Also if they are clip suspenders then they are clipped onto the belt which is an odd choice because that is not a nice thing to do to a formal belt, you will damage the surface and make it look a bit like it got chewed on. It doesn't go down enough to be a belt hook suspender, it would have to go down to the bottom of the belt. It absolutely isn't a button braces suspender set up because those have leather ends. (edit: upon further consideration I am fairly sure this is intended to be a narrow clip)

Lastly, and this is kind of a nitpick (lol I say as if the rest of this wasn't a nitpick) but wearing suspenders with a belt is pretty unusual outside of work wear, with people like contractors wearing heavy duty belt hooked suspenders to hold up pants (often with heavy tools in/on the pants or the belt) for a long work day with lots of movement.

Clip, trigger snap, and belt hook suspenders would all be way too informal and blue collar to go with that suit in general. The appropriate choice would be button braces suspenders which are something you wear instead of a belt, not with one.

But this artist is here to draw big strong pretty women in suits, not to get every detail of suspenders right and big strong pretty women are more important. The only really bad thing is that this lack of familiarity with suspenders implies that the artist has never worn suspenders, which is a shame because they are pretty comfy, especially button braced or belt hooked ones.

I'm so normal about mechanisms for keeping pants up. Can you believe I've never been diagnosed?

  • Ya, by that logic oil is solar energy too because the ancient algae photosynthesized to grow before it died and was converted into oil. Ridiculous! Nuclear energy is solar because the uranium was formed in a supernova!

  • This is a wild flattening of history and an insane level of whataboutism. Absolutely not. This is neither accurate nor ethical to normalize one of the most brutal chattel slavery systems in history and imply that it is the same as what any other civilization did. To draw direct comparison to their neighbors, where the Spartans would routinely murder their slaves in cold blood and had the practice enshrined in law, the Achaemenid Persians practiced something much more akin to modern prison labor; Still a morally dubious practice as best but not even close to the deeply evil things the Spartans were doing.

  • As well they should have! The spartan society was built on slavery. And not just regular slavery but some of the most brutal slavery in history. The only thing Xerxes did wrong was not kill enough Spartans.

  • I got 4th place by counting the height (in Skittles), the radius (also in skittles), and then doing H x Pi x R^2. That resulted in an answer that was too high so I started guessing and got lucky and was only 10 off lol
