Serious question: Do you believe magic is real? Or the supernatural in general?

I mean anything like cursed or lucky objects, ghosts, etc?

Figured it's the spooky season and I don't know too many people irl to talk to about the supernatural without discovering q-level brainworms.

I'll comment in the thread with my answer.

Holy f*ck.
  • To be fair, I can't think of any way to improve my life with 44 billion dollars either.

  • The last few Federated Lemmy days have reminded me that while GOP conservatives are hot-blooded monsters, liberals are *cold-blooded* monsters.
  • It's a disturbing, but necessary reality check. The people who can comfortably detach themselves from the horrors of what's happening are going to try to stay comfortably detached.

Fuck that though. You're not being a downer or unrealistic by pointing out unnecessary death and suffering. This isn't normal and pretending that it is does a disservice to the people killed in the name of acceptable losses for profit.

  • I see it more as Democrats killing 50 and allowing 50 more to die because the parliamentarian said rules are rules.

  • Hurricane Hilary to threaten flooding rain in California, Nevada and Arizona
  • Merced got fucked up back in December with flooded apartments and parking lots. The crumbling infrastructure is going to be washed away.

  • Trump and his supporters are using the word "rigger" for the n-word.
  • Like I get pointing and laughing at someone like trump-moist, but sometimes I feel it leans too close to an irony-poisoned indifference to the horrible things he says and propagates.

I understand not caring in the grand scheme of things because it's ultimately nothing new in the West, but it's still rough when you want to talk to people about the blatant dog whistling.

  • The US government has emergency powers to limit patents. I can't recall a time it's been yet in recent memory (but they could pull out the parliamentarian bullshit).

But you'd think a drug that reduces the transmission of HIV down to under a percent would be freely available. I mean just make it freely available, have doctors recommend it when applicable, and we could reduce HIV to a more manageable condition.

I think about gay men I've talked to who couldn't afford PrEP or didn't even know it existed. Sex education is a nightmare in the US and we're sending lgbt kids in blind when there are so many resources stuck behind paywalls.

  • In Search of a Soviet Holocaust - After 50 years on the fringes, the Ukraine famine debate is finally front and center.
  • I hate that it's controversial to point out that the effort to minimize the Holocaust by not teaching it in schools, normalizing jokes/denial, and deflecting accountability is all deliberate and needs to be fought every time.

It's stunning how much effort they'll go to just to find a worse atrocity.

I mean it's obvious why - the mechanisms in place that enabled the Holocaust are alive and well in the world. Powerful people don't want to lose what they've acquired through blood and so they have a vested interest in people forgetting the Holocaust.

  • Weekly Queer Thread (8/11/23)
  • Update on the last time a commented on the queer thread a while back.

I'm still figuring out my gender and that's been a cool experience. I've been thinking about it off and on for a little over a year now, and it's a lot of identifying and reflecting on stuff that I take for granted.

Like maybe I'm not necessarily genderqueer, but maybe I'm feeling a strain from how my race is stereotyped in such a way that navigating m/m spaces just sucks.

I guess I feel like I'm a guy, but I don't want to be put into assumed roles in relationships just because of my appearance or background. Imagine that!

It's a process, but it's nice because it feels like I'm getting closer to having the life that I want.

Gotta say, I love that you can turn off scores now.

I had a lot of anxiety and obsession with getting upbears in posts and comments and felt a weird competitiveness that wasn't healthy. It's nice being able to turn off the number of votes and just engage without trying to literally score points.

Thanks for being less and less like !reddit-logo every day!

5 white nationalists sue Seattle man for allegedly leaking their identities.
  • I haven't heard chuds' arguments defending Libs of TikTok doing the same things to teachers and lgbt+ people, but I do like seeing their tears.

Oh no! You're being harassed and losing your jobs?! Boo fucking hoo, cry more, and don't be a nazi piece of shit.

  • 5 white nationalists sue Seattle man for allegedly leaking their identities.
  • But it's white nationalists in a country that holds delusions about white supremacy. This could go either way.

  • It's kinda funny thinking about the stigma around cisnormative men listening to music (especially pop) performed by women.

I was kinda on a nostalgia trip and I stumbled on Jennifer Lopez's Waiting for Tonight, and it's basically about how she wants to fuck her partner. It could be more romantic in nature, and for some people it is, but looking at the repression in the West, it's very racy for its time.

But I ask: Why is it considered bad for straight men to want to listen to a song about how a woman wants to fuck? Volcel Pledge, notwithstanding.

I mean I know the answer is systemic misogyny, but like it doesn't even make sense?

It's so bizarre to me as a queer person attracted to men that men and boys are discouraged from listening to musicians who are women.

I'd have loved growing up with musicians I'm attracted to who were attracted to my gender.

I sorta want to explore this experience as an outsider, but I'm curious, what was that like? Did you listen to artists you liked in secret? How are your music tastes now? Any recommendations on music that feels different on a revisit?

I hate that part of capitalism is verifying that you're not being scammed at any given moment.

I'm job hunting and went to a website to confirm if it was a real business. It just sucks that it's my personal responsibility™️ to make sure the email that replied to my application was the real thing. That somewhere between the email confirmations, the website redirects, and the occasional polite interviews, somebody could've just taken my personal information or gotten my money.

And then there's nobody who will do anything if I did get scammed.

But go off on how nobody wants to work anymore. This shit is exhausting.
