Bullying Drama

I had a small flock of 3 hens who all got along once the pecking order was figured out.

One day, a lower hen became broody and I allowed her to hatch a clutch of eggs. This broodyness made her a bit defensive and caused some issues with the top hen.

Once the eggs hatched I separated her and her chicks to a nursery space away from the other hens until I felt they were old enough to free range, ~4 weeks. I didn't move her while nesting because I was afraid of breaking her broodyness.

Gradually she became less and less protective and has now returned to laying eggs. The chicks are independent approaching 8 weeks, although still attached to the mother hen. They are still roosting/nesting separately to the other hens in the nursery coop.

When the bullying happens now, she submits immediately to the lead hen and has no protective urges for the chicks.

The issue is that the top hen isn't letting up and I'm concerned about what happens when the chicks become too big to fit in the nursery coop and everyone needs to roost together.

I've seen some recommendations to separate the one being bullied for awhile, others to separate the bully and others to let things play out. One thing I was potentially going to wait out was for the rooster chick(s) to grow up enough to police the hen fighting.

Any other suggestions here?

  • Karun Chandhok on sky commentary just said Red Bull hasn't had a second driver pushing for results since Riccardo. How do people forget how good Perez actually was. It's clear that Max is just on another level, but Perez worked some miracles to be as close as he was (at times)

The knowledge of what these actually are, appears to have been lost to the ages. A modern tragedy equivalent to the burning of the library of Alexandria.

    What biscuits are must tries?
  • Where we live, there's an independent supermarket with blue badge parking. They do a certain biscuit there that you can't get it anywhere else. It's like a viscount with minty interior that my wife likes. It's a minty biscuit. It's a minty biscuit and it's got two halves, chocolate on the top. It's wrapped in silver foil. Right, she's very fond of them and it's got a sort of soft centre in the middle. A minty biscuit. And it's the only place you can get this minty biscuit. So sometimes in order to get it... It's got quite crunchy. It's a crunchy biscuit. A crunchy minty biscuit with chocolate. Well this biscuit, the crunchy minty biscuit that she likes, you can only get it from this particular shop. Well she likes this biscuit and sometimes I can't get there unless I use the blue badge to go and get it. It's a very nice biscuit. It's baked and it's a chocolate affair. It is delicious. Its very nice. It's a lovely one. I've eaten the biscuit, don't get me wrong. I've had one and they're jolly nice. They're mostly for my wife and the neighbour comes around, he's quite keen on them. He doesn't like the orange ones but he likes the minty ones and I've gone round and got that for them. The orange one isn't so nice it's the minty one really.

  • I'm so grateful for you sharing this.

I remember asking about it in a previous post you made and still feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all. I'm going to spend some time when I'm free to properly read and understand this and then post up some results. I've got some very sad calatheas that I can hopefully bring to life.

  • Chased a rat out of the house at 4am.
  • Depending where you are, you might have a legal responsibility to control them. Even if you don't, I would seriously consider getting some traps because they could become a serious issue if left to multiply. The fact one got in the house should be an alarm bell.

My neighbour throws bird seed around and when I work from home I always see rats in their garden. I've told them and it carries on. I think it is extremely unfair to me the other neighbours to knowingly have rats and essentially encourage them by continuing to feed them.

Traps and any potential improvements to the compost rig should be high on the list based on what you have described.

Edit, I've merged yours and OPs writing in my tired mind, but the general point is the same.

  • Would it ever be possible to enforce post tags on Lemmy?

I have a load of filters set up on my feed, notably I don't want to see Trump or Elon.

Due to recent events, so much content is coming through that it is as if I don't have filters at all.

If the text or title doesn't include the key words, it can't be filtered. All the screenshots or posts with jokes or bad titles can't be filtered.

I think the only way proper filters could be achieved is with a separate 'tags' field that could be added to or voted on by community members.

This might all seem like a lot of effort, but feed filters are such a good feature that I think it would be worth it.

I don't want unreasonable perfection for the filters, but the system seems too flawed at the moment.

I have no idea where this kind of discussion or decision would be made so I'm just throwing it out as a question here.

    How to stop AI glasses?

There are lots of issues I have with them in terms of privacy, but I'm going to be very specific in asking about a certain situation and would prefer to stay on that topic if possible.

I have seen someone showing AI glasses which allow the wearer to cheat at chess. The glasses provide the wearer with computer engine moves, essentially making them unbeatable against even the strongest grand masters.

How can someone prevent this from happening, for example in a tournament match?

I don't consider this as being an issue at the highest level of professional play, but for club and casual players they might not have the resources to deal with this.

Currently the camera and/or screen information might be fairly obvious just by looking, but assuming technology improves this could become harder to detect.

Retrospectively, it would be easy to spot a cheater and correct results, however this still spoils things by having the cheating in the first place.

It isn't realistic to ask people to play without glasses, and I'm not aware of any way to stop cameras or ai from functioning.

So what can be done, if anything?

    Monstera Help 🥺

I just noticed this, what should I do? Sorry for the vague question but I can't find any good articles on what this is.

Everything I find starts the same way "top 8 reasons for brown leaves". Then says too much water, not enough water, too much light not enough light too much fertilizer not enough, wrong kind of fertilizer and so on and so on. That isn't helpful! Do I just have to guess? Why is all plant knowledge basically voodoo?

I'm tempted to take a cutting so I have a spare to try again if it all goes wrong, but the plant only has 5 leaves, so I'm stressing out.

Hello From A New Chicken Keeper

First I want to say hello, I have only 3 lovely chickens to start off with as I learn the ropes.

Secondly, my neighbours son is absolutely obsessed with the chickens. It's really nice, but he is also feeding them huge amounts of wild bird seed and I'm a little worried. There are mounds of the stuff being poured over the fence!

I have spoken to his parents nicely and asked them to stop him doing so, which they understand.

In case this doesn't get resolved quickly, is there any danger that this can cause harm to my chickens?

Does my plant have the plague?

Any idea what this is? Many leaves are dying on the plant, wondering if there is a way to save it. I have forgotten the name of the plant, but will update when I find it.

    Flowering Aglaonema?

I have a dreamcatcher which I thought had a dying leaf or something, but it looks like this could be something like seeds!? There is a second pod which isn't open to the left in the picture.

I don't really know what it is but I'm excited about it. My other aglaonema hasn't grown at all in 2 years!

    Blue Steel Convert

I bought a set of three carbon steel pans, and they are amazing. Is this allowed here? They are 99% iron I think.

They are lighter than a full iron pan but you still season them in the same way.

I have had an iron pan dedicated to meat cooking for a few years now, but I'm not sure it will get much use now.

These are new pans, so I'll have to see how they last, but I'm very optimistic.

    Fast food should be expensive.

I get that until recently it was considered normal and relatively cheap, but you are literally paying someone else to make food for you.

It can't be sustainable without exploitation of workers and/or animal welfare to have that available to the majority of people on a regular basis.

If you can only afford fast food as a luxury, to me that seems like a good thing.

    Help wanted: Is this OK?

I was given a Montsera(?) cutting and I don't really know if this leaf is too wrinkled? It's a minefield trying to read about and understand if I have over or under watered. I just don't know what this plant actually wants.

My usual approach is to assume I have over watered if a plant looks unhappy, but I don't know if these bounce back after a period of under watering, if I hold back on watering more now.

    Hiding posts?

I might have missed it somewhere, but is it possible to hide posts here. I like to hide popular posts once I am done seeing or engaging with them.

With the lower traffic here, I think this would especially help with finding new content.
