  • I've had a fantasy since I was young that I would live to see some start to building colonies on the moon or Mars. The older I get and realize how vast the distances are between the earth, the moon, Mars and anything else, I've realized that I don't think we'll ever really leave earth in anything more than to go into orbit around earth. People are very tied to the environment that we formed in and taking that with us to another planet will be prohibitively expensive and refreshing supplies to support that can largely only be done on earth.

Now I believe people won't make any permanent settlement outside of earth in my lifetime or ever.

  • Directors are turning to streaming to fulfil their epic visions – and avoid ‘bum ache’
  • There was an intermission during Hateful 8 and it was glorious being able to get a restroom break and another beer without feeling guilty of getting up in the middle of the movie. So I definitely agree we need more of those.

  • There was a ton of stupid conspiracy theories around the whole clones sheep thing back then. I think looking back on that time period (like two decades ago, not one) the dumb conspiracies were forgotten as they didn't lead to anything outside of fearmongering.

Same for the moon landing, there are still conspiracies that it was all faked.

  • Higher rates of lung cancer in women are a mystery for researchers
  • It's probably just some sexist bias influencing the studies. I'm guessing the doctors performing the studies have reviewed cases from actors and actresses, who use a lot of makeup and hair spray, and still found a higher rate of lung cancer in women.

Maybe women are more likely to the doctor at the first sign of trouble rather than waiting until the cancer spreads leading to more diagnosisis?

  • Spyware can infect your phone or computer via the ads you see online – report
  • Blocking ads is just another layer of defense in your security stack. I want to say it’s like locking your front door, but not using an ad blocker is worse than just having your front door unlocked.

Imagine you have numerous solicitors coming up to your front door everyday and you left your front door not only wide open, but off the hinges. Who’s walking into your home with the best of intentions in that situation?

  • Opinions wanted: defederating with reddit repost bot instances
  • I’m at the point where I think all bot accounts need to just be banned from Lemmy. If we’re trying to build engagement, a constant stream of reposts or a straight up rss feed is not helping.

  • Neckbeard rule
  • Is that why the text they wrote was so disturbing to read? Have they lived in an echo chamber for so long that they think it’s okay to talk about a person like they’re a cadaver. F’ing creepy

  • Blocked instances question
  • Exploadingheads is full of chuds and SJW is too.

I will say it’s nice that this instance isn’t drawing lines along political leanings so I can just block the ones I don’t like to see. I’m not sure what the admins are doing otherwise.

I’m sure the users here will start bubbling up as having more of an appetite for one side or the other and other instances will start defeding from infosec.pub.

Honestly there is so much drama related to federating or defederating that’s it’s killing my interest in Lemmy in general.

In anycase, is anyone running into trouble with lemmygrad or exploading heads being federated? I’ve been reading that folks at hexbear are getting harassed by other Lemmy instances and there are discussions of them going full defederated as a result. I don’t like the views on exploadingheads but so far I just block and move on, so no harm done.
