Yeah, this. It's an amazingly well-written novel... seriously, one of the greats. But I would absolutely never describe it as a love story. That definitely requires some amount of reciprocation and not just grooming and rape.

English is kind of weak in this arena because we only have one word for love, but we can modify it to be more useful: romantic love and fraternal love. Any other use stems from these two, and will basically boil down to "I like ___a lot."
Another specification is when people ask "Do you love them, or are you in love with them?"
"In love" means romantic love, I think. You want to spend your life with this person, probably every day, will overlook their faults and are enamored with the things they do, the way their brain works, etc.

Asia in general is just much more "honest" than the West. If you're fat, they won't beat around the bush and say "you're beautiful the way you are." If you're ugly, they won't hide in platitudes, they'll say "damn, it must suck that you're so ugly."
It's not malicious, these are simply facts that they don't ignore. And, to be honest, I think it's healthier in a lot of ways. The west has a ridiculously massive weight problem that we just completely ignore - or even actively support - because people are afraid to make anyone feel bad.

Definitely not interested enough in the characters for an anime - they're all really strongly stereotyped and (IMO) annoying. The game was decently fun, though! A bit of a grind, but I had a good time with it

Yes, and compared to the companies they run, even their emissions are completely negligible. Individual action will not fix our climate crisis, regardless of who does it. Systemic change is the only option that has the possibility of a statistically-useful effect.
