'The big one': Researchers gain clearest picture yet of fault that threatens the Pacific Northwest
  • If you actually read the article you would know that this is not a prediction of any kind. It is about a paper that was recently published which further clarifies something that was already well understood, that the Pacific northwest is just as likely to see extremely large magnitude earthquakes as any of the other large subduction zones. The PNW isn't alone in being woefully under prepared for large earthquakes, California and parts of the Midwest (New Madrid) are also burying their heads in the sand on this issue. The facts of the matter aside, dumping some myopic shitpost about your holiday plans on a subject that involves the lives of millions makes you come off as a complete psycho.

Edit: Who exactly jokes about natural disasters which are quite literally waiting to happen? Doesn't seem particularly funny to me 🤷

Edit2: You know, I actually hadn't considered the possibility that this was a joke, mostly because it just isn't a funny thing to laugh about. Especially in a science based community. But in hindsight I do stand by the comment. This kind of joking about earthquakes like they are an impossibility actually does contribute to the flippant attitudes politicians and the public have to these things. It's not unfunny because I enjoy being the fun police, it's unfunny because it's a statistical certainty that an event like this WILL happen somewhere eventually and if they aren't taken more seriously they will kill a lot of people. So it isn't necessarily the earthquake that ultimately lead to those deaths, it's attitudes like this where we crack questionable one liners about it instead of taking actual steps to mitigate risk.

  • Continental D r i f t s
  • Is it against the rules to nitpick bad science here? Because if it isn't then this is absolutely not how continental drift works, there is no ocean of magma under the earth's crust. The asthenosphere contains small amounts of magma that lead to a "fluid like" behaviour over long time scales. But even if I'm being generous and assuming the creator is referring to the asthenosphere then the upper layer should probably be labeled as the lithosphere and not the crust since the latter refers to the chemical boundary with the mantle and not the brittle mechanical regime that sits above the asthenosphere. Meme is still cool though, thanks for listening to my TED talk 🫠

  • they're putting micrulechips in the cheese
  • It's not bougie at all, all regional and traditional food produce is heavily regulated here (in Italy) and I think you'd struggle to find anyone that thinks rules about product naming should be relaxed. Traditional cuisine is just super important to Italians and they take the idea of foreigners undercutting their producers very seriously. It isn't just famous cheeses like parmiggiano either, every area has its own unique food and wine.

Coming from a lot of other countries it seems weird and stuck up because we're used to eating food that's been extruded or precooked on an industrial scale, but I think it's endearing that they give a shit about food heritage. Local food is just a huge deal here, people care about eating locally sourced foods and seasonal vegetables.

  • Admin update - Hexbear Defederated
  • They are literally spamming duplicate "fuck democracy" posts in a thread about community feedback, you can't make this shit up. And as a cherry on top it has some fucking untagged gore that straight up loads as a thumbnail for me without clicking.

How about you start setting some actual standards for behaviour around here and actually keep things safe for folks Ada? Carrying water for the tankies like this must be exhausting. A person's/communities transness doesn't excuse or offset their shitty behaviour.

EDIT: oh cool it looks like those posts got deleted, thank you. I think them being here caused my original post to come out more aggro so apologies. The rest of it stands though.

  • Hexbear Discussion Round 2
  • I'm so sorry about your friends. At this point the admin has made it clear they have no problem with this behaviour. Literally making excuses for and handwaving a cryptofascist state ravaging one of its smaller neighbours doesn't constitute harassment.

It doesn't seem possible to me that you can maintain a safe and inclusive space for all queer people while allowing a minority to engage in war apologism and all other manner of Soviet themed, larper bullshit. I really don't want to actually try to address why what they're doing is inexcusable because frankly they live for that kind of engagement, but its fucking shameful that this has become an issue at all, let alone a permanent feature of the community.

I really hope that your friends stay safe.

  • Hexbear Discussion Round 2
  • I've said almost all I care to on this matter except to point out that it has taken less than a day for a Ukrainian war related post to appear on 196 and for hexbear "Marxist Leninists" to start proudly proclaiming their pro Russia opinions. You give these people a platform by staying federated and they will do this, and whether or not you consider their opinions to be offensive is somewhat subjective (I do) they are at the very least a major vibe killer. Anyways, I was right and if this shit keeps popping up in my feed I'm out, peace.

  • Can we defederate from hexbear.net?
  • I had never heard of that instance before opening this thread and ooh boy do I wish I hadn't. I have known these kinds of people for a long time, I've been these kinds of people (for a thankfully brief period). Just in this thread there are hexbear users doing the usual tank schtick of goading people into political discussions and calling them neolibs. I can see why some might view them as a neutral or even positive place to have around given their apparent progressivism towards queer people and their mod team being largely trans, but I really don't think that really makes any difference. You can slap some pride flags on it all but ultimately if you drill down deep enough into the beliefs of any group that proudly calls themselves Marxist Leninist you're going to find some truly ugly shit. And it's not just the obvious stuff like having to hear how progressive Cuba is, the stances they take on oppressive regimes always leads to some kind of war crimes/genocide/ethnic cleansing denial, and where they're self aware enough to not outright deny they will deflect. I can see why from the perspective of queer western people this might all seem a bit esoteric because a lot of them will attempt to dance around the issues but they are there and a lot of people with familial connections to this stuff that do see it for what it is. And before any of their users get excited I'm not going to engage with your shit, I've seen you, I've been you, I know your shit and I don't fuck with it. If you just scroll through here you can see the neolib name-calling and tankie memeing/totally ironic (probably) propaganda, they have zero self control. The blue and pink ain't fooling me.

  • HW News - Linus Tech Tips' Terrible Response, ESMC, & Starfield x AMD GPUs
  • While not being directly related it might be worth noting that a former employee of lmg has now come forward on twitter to describe in gory detail the kind of treatment she received while working there. The culture there sounds utterly disgusting and based on their history it is all extremely believable. Link to the post

  • Tips: how to present agender tomboy on an amab person
  • I think I get the vibe you're going for. I have a selection of colorful oversized shirts and t-shirts that I think do a decent job (a lot of tie dye). That kind of fit helps to obscure my body type a bit since most tops fit me very tight in the shoulders and chest. Other than that I sometimes paint my nails random colours and generally keep my hair on the longer side. More than anything else I think the neon green nails make it hard for people to just assume "man", and it doesn't necessarily have to look super girly either.
