  • I, a Canadian, was part of a similar discussion. I, like JL, thought that stance was crazy. Unlike him, I did some research, saw that was a common definition in Canada, so clarified what I meant in my original comment and then stopped using that term for Canadian elected officials. I'm not sure why he chose his route.

  • On the flipside, the government hosting a fediverse instance of Mastodon would give a lot more credibility than a blue checkmark, and could be easily linked in other social media. This would give all the reach they had before and more, give them independence from external social media control, and would advertise the fediverse and Mastodon as alternatives to corporate controlled social media. Since the big problem with building social media is getting people to leave what they're currently using, duplicating your message into a new and preferred system would ease that transition. And if tools were made to cross post onto different social media, it would make it about as easy as what they're doing now.

  • But likewise, while Canadians are able to deal with this terrain, out southern 200 km is very similar to America's northern 200 km, and a lot of us sound and look like a lot of you. Infiltrating America and attacking domestically would be easier for Canadians than just about any other country.

  • Yeah, I don't see getting worked up about artistic taste. No one is forcing g them to read their stuff, and if someone actually is, their problem should be with whoever is forcing them to.

Let people enjoy their shit and move on.

  • You're really limiting yourself there. The whole idea is that you're connected with a bunch of other instances where you can see things that aren't hosted on your instance.

That's kind of like saying you only visit art galleries that are in New York, because that's where you live. There's a lot of great stuff there, sure, but you're missing out. And in this analogy, you have a free ticket to a bunch of other cities with interesting art galleries of their own.

  • Looks like it's will have to spell it out, then. This is a specific issue happening to Canadians who live in Nova Scotia, but it isn't a unique problem to Nova Scotians and if you focus simply on this one instance you will probably not be able to identify the underlying cause, which is affecting all Canadians. And while the problem at hand may be under provincial purview, it is a problem that is happening at the provincial level across the country. I'm sure we can find elected officials at all levels of government who have been strident against some position while they weren't in charge and suddenly don't want to change things as soon as they're in charge.

Your whole comment chain comes across with the same tone as saying we can't talk about the systemic problems in healthcare at a national level because they're a provincial matter and the strikingly similar problems from province to province are completely unrelated. 🙄

  • If the only thing wrong with your appliance is a damaged cord, which usually happens near where it's plugged into the wall, and it is a three-pronged cord, the information above is sufficient to replace the plug. Note that you will need to be able to identify the three wires and the color they represent, which is usually followed in decent power cords (of course, not all of them are decent).

Absolutely, if you aren't confident in your knowledge and don't have someone who can verify your work, don't do it. It's cheaper to throw away any given appliance than it is to throw away your home via an electrical fire. But basic AC electricity isn't that complicated, even if it's more complicated than basic DC electricity.
