Daily Discussion - 05 February 2024
  • Some people just enjoy shitting on us. Go back and look at how we were talked about in the media. No one took us seriously, and we barely made a few ppls top 4 predictions, and then we started winning.

    • "They haven't faced any real competition, just wait"

Once that narrative dried up it was onto

    • "They can't sustain this"

But we did, and then Jesus got hurt.

    • "They can't do it without a proper striker"

And we just kept on ticking, winning games and picking up points. Somehow we went from barely being worthy of top 4 to title contenders by mid season and the only team in the league giving City City a proper fight for the title.

Once people got sick of us winning, they started complaining, and out came the fun police.

  • Thank you sweet baby Jesus for getting Rice at a bargain price.

On a more serious note though, and I know this will run so many ppl the wrong way, thank god for Havertz and his versatility. I really don't think Havertz is as bad as people make him out to be and I think as time progresses he will only get better.

  • [Post-Match Thread] Arsenal F.C. v.s. Liverpool F.C.
  • Overall it went well, and the icing on the cake is getting to watch us win. The Rice + Jorginho pairing has worked wonders, and I'm still shocked how amazingly well Rice has settled in and is playing.

  • Those of you who work 8+ hours outside in the cold regularly, how do you dress for the job?
  • The only tight layer is the first.

    My winter set up is:

First layer: tight top + bottom wool long johns (in sure there is a proper term for em, but it's what we called em)

Second layer: loose wool onesie I got from Roots.

Third layer: loose sweat pants + hoodless sweater

Fourth layer: loose insulated work pants + work hoodie

Fifth layer: snow pants and jacket

This gets me through winter in Winnipeg and rarely do I get cold.

  • The match between Romania and Kosovo has been suspended due to Romanian fans showing racism to the Kosovar players
  • Note the bold word ......

Kosovo Albanians belong to the ethnic Albanian sub-group of Ghegs,[10] who inhabit the north of Albania, north of the Shkumbin river, Kosovo, southern Serbia, and western parts of North Macedonia.

    Now what is racism?

prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.

Explain to me, how this isn't racism?

  • The rapidly declining state of La Liga.
  • The only way they are escaping the death spiral is for teams to adopt attacking styles of play while also investing in, cheap, young attacking talent. Football is an international sport and outside of Barca and Madrid the other teams need to attract new fans and they won't be doing that with murder ball. I'm the average fan the league needs to attract and I personally don't want to watch a bunch of teams play 60-70 mins of slow, defensive and occasionally brutal football.

Brighton have made a case for smaller teams who want to compete and it's time for some teams to start looking at how they can adopt some of Brighton's philosophies and emulating them.

  • Liverpool have reached agreement with Bayern Munich to sign Ryan Gravenberch. Fixed fee €40m. Netherlands international to join on long-term contract.
  • Technically, yes.

I haven't had the luxury of sitting down and watching games as closely as I'd like to, but Klopp is doing something different this year. Ive s¹een Gakpo start in the CM slot while Mac Allister has been the DM basically.

Given their depth issues at CM, plugging the DM role for one year isn't a big problem. I should probably go check YouTube for an in depth analysis of their tactics this year when I find some time.

  • 2023/24 Champions League Group Stage Draw
  • There is no clear front runner in that group and there will be no easy game, so every point is going to matter.

I'd like to see Milan and Dortmund move on but I have a feeling it will be Newcastle and PSG.

  • Chelsea have a billion-dollar team, but do they have a plan?
  • Every 100 million raised by player sales can fund 500 million of purchases if the players sign five-year contracts.

The problem with this theory is that it isn't perpetual and it ignores the debt that continues to grow. See below.

    • Year 1. Sell 100, Buy 500, -400 net.
    • Year 2. Sell 100, Buy 500, -800 net.
    • Year 3. Sell 100, Buy 500, -1,200 net.
    • Year 4. Sell 100, Buy 500, -1,600 net.
    • Year 5. Sell 100, Buy 500 - 2,000 net.

Kicking the can further down the road while accruing more dept isn't sustainable and I'm not sure what the end goal is. Spending 1b doesn't guarantee success (ask Man U fans) and if Chelsea can't get their shit together and get into CL regularly they will eventually end up in a financial dumster fire.

As for the players and the manager, I'm not optimistic in how it will all play out. Poch is a good manager and I'm sure he will turn things around from the mess that was last year, but I don't see how this squad gets beyond 7th, especially if Brighton, Brentford and Villa continue playing as well as they are.
