  • Every case is different and the UK as a political union without a written constitution can technically allow one of their four home nations to become independent (again).

The US has had bad experiences with seceding states. Big kerfuffle that people didn't want to repeat.

When it comes to international recognition of seceding territories, it's frankly a mess. And also, frankly, everything is possible. Kosovo is an example where the majority of the international community decided to recognize it as a sovereign country. It was a solution to a war situation that didn't make all parties happy. Serbia and Russia, for instance, still don't recognize it. So while Mass may not technically be allowed to leave, if it did anyway, it would depend on the reaction from the rest of the union first and foremost, and then on the international community. If they back you and maybe even send peace keepers, there is a chance still. But there is a whole laundry list of things that have to go right for this to happen.

I'd suggest you devote all your energy to fixing the United States first. Resist 47 and his GOP cult followers. Not all is lost just yet.

  • Trump's tremendous social media platform truth dot barf runs on Activity Pub, they just don't federate with anyone by default. It's like they don't want dissenting views on there. Weird.

  • This question is nonsensical. Let's say Amazon leaves the EU. What does that have to do with the Fediverse? If all US social media companies left, people will find other forums to engage in. This could be the Fediverse, could be something else that hasn't been created yet.

In the long run, I think we will all end up on a version of federated social media. The corporate silos will lose their appeal, regardless of where they're based. Whether this future federated service will be based on Activity Pub or AT or whatever protocol no one knows right now.

  • There don't have to be any protest songs. The message could be carried by another medium.

I also think right now that there is a period of uncertainty and intimidation going on. No industry wants to step into the limelight speaking up against the magas for fear of direct reprisals from the government or from those who really like it or having their attorneys targeted. So maybe the big kahunas of the music industry are less inclined to publish protest songs when they know an orange sh!tstorm will come their way when they do.

It may also be too early for any protest song to be written, recorded, and to have gained enough traction for anyone to notice.

  • I was a child and had enough time to devote to learning this.

For me it's my middle finger hitting the cushion below the thumb that makes the noise.

  • With kids there is no one size fits all approach. And you won't do everything right as a parent either. Ever. You're on a tightrope walk of keeping the ills of the world away from them and them fantasizing about the ills of the world from the bits and pieces they pick up along the way.

They have to feel safe. With you/at home/etc. As long as you get that mostly right, the other pieces fall into place. One of those pieces will be the MO you're looking for here.

If you're overly worried about the idea of having kids: even the dumbest, most ignorant humans have brought up the overwhelming majority of their children successfully. It's not as hard as one thinks before. Because you worry about something like this way ahead of time, I am fairly sure you'll do better than them.

  • He sort of did. Beverly shot a hole into his belly.

  • I think the tipping point where most credits were at the end occurred in the early 00s.

I think it's funny, nay, Alanis would call it ironic, that decades earlier trailers moved from the back to the front.

  • I appreciate your effort to keep senseless loss of lives in mind here. I don't think it will work. They don't want to be US citizens. And the way the Trump economy is going to shape out, 1 million dollars may not be worth that much soon.

  • Favorite = read receipt, boost = like. It's not an absolute rule but it's in the ballpark.

  • I don't think that's the case in France. Technically, there was consent from the parents. The age of consent is 15. What they did was morally questionable but not illegal.

  • Then you haven't been to China. It's a shorthand gesture there. The character for ten is 十 so I'm not sure if the gesture informed the character or the other way around. What is noteworthy is just that both cultures ended up with a cross to denote ten.

  • All the best for your furry friend.

One batch of the 4A's batteries have become a fire hazard. That's why Google (near)bricked the phones to prevent that.

These delayed notifications sound like some background processes get killed. I hazard to guess that's why you get all at once once you wake up the phone. So look for items like background and battery optimization in the settings and see if you can re-enable some of these.

It's been a minute with the 4A. I think it's great that you keep extending the life of the phone and thus reduce e-waste. But I think it might be time to look for another phone.

  • Just as an aside and in addition to the other comments here:

There is a phenomenon called regulatory capture. It can take many different forms but the short version is that agencies and policies get perverted to only benefit one group. When the intention should be society at large.

There is a process where the big players, say OpenAI, call for regulation of their industry, not because they feel it needs regulating but because the regulatory hurdles will keep competitors at bay. Meta pulled a stunt like that as well with social networks. So big hype company calling for regulation in their field is a red flag, accompanied by a loud alarm bell.

  • A good faith argument kind of presupposes that all people constantly objectively question their convictions. And I don't think we humans do that. We're very happy with the way we think. And very capable of holding opposing viewpoints at the same time.

It is easy to be caught up in jingoistic fervor. It's easy not to register all the incremental changes that go against your ideals. It's easy to overlook atrocities that are committed "by your team, for the cause." It only takes mental gymnastics we're perfectly capable of as a species.

  • You're trying to apply conventional logic to this. Stop. They only want more power and money and they would say anything to get it.

  • Most of us don't have the luxury of choosing our families. We can just try to do the best with the hand we're dealt. I'm sorry for your loss.

Maybe delete the picture, put the phone down, and try to think of 20 great things about your grandmother.
