This is a generic format but you're right that it is confusing to keep in.
Xigxag is mentioned, but you're right that I forgot to include BookBeat. The others are US based apps but support your local library/bookstore
It means they share their profits with others. In this case, they enable you to support nearby libraries and facilitate the process.
Thanks for this. I spend so much time on the content from guide to guide that I forget how someone reading it for the first time might interpret it.
Will update the guide and post it to !PurchaseWithPurpose@lemmy.world
Thanks for the suggestion! Will add it to the next version of the guide.
Profit Share is good! It means they are sharing in the revenue. In this case, it is with your local libraries or bookstore!
Another shoutout to the "Library Extension". It will help you find alternatives should Storytel not have the option you want.
If someone wants to transcribe these guides, then I am more than happy to include them!
This is the first version of this guide, so please share any feedback, and I'll include it in the next version.
And let me know if I missed any Canadian or Canadian adjacent companies :)

Note: I include the services that directly support local libraries and/or are non-profit organizations
I found this one the most insightful guide to date! I always thought that Audible had no better alternatives. I couldn't have been more wrong!
It might mean using one/two different apps, but plenty of better options are available. And you can support your local library or bookstore.
P.S. I am aware that I am a week behind schedule... my job sadly has gotten in the way of things last week.
It is noted at the bottom, but I forgot to highlight it! Thanks for pointing that out.
haha my bad - fixed.
It is mentioned in the deep dive :) https://lemmy.world/post/27983334
Waterfox was bought out by an advertising company, but they became independent again.
I am thinking of removing it from there. I do mention it in the disclaimers.
I found this useful resource explaining their issues - https://thelibre.news/no-really-dont-use-brave/.
If anyone else has something better, I am happy to reference it directly

Waterfox/LibreFox - The question of which browsers offers the most privacy isn't straightforward. But WaterFox and LibreWolf are often recommended and considered private e.g. https://www.privacytools.io/private-browser . However, I won't argue the specifics of this as I relied on other posts and resources rather than being an expert myself.

These types of disclaimers (for Bluesky) are mentioned in the deep-dives.

There is a separate Google Drive to Proton Drive comparison. Not sure the point here. This is to help people to find Office Suite alternatives, which I don't believe Proton Drive has.
-
Proton Services - yup, which is why Proton is mentioned with the "Boycott US" tag.
Thanks, I realized after the fact that the shortlinks point to the Reddit deep-dive guides.
