And they don't.
  • The Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Councilor or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action’; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a ‘more convenient season.’ ”

    MLK

I would argue that for these people, nonviolence is a necessary preamble or alternative, just as MLK was a foil to the Black Panthers.

  • What's it like working night shift?
  • I did 4 years of nights. The real trick is being able to sleep during the day. So whatever ear plugs, face mask, blackout curtains you need, make sure they work for you. I generally would work up to it staying up until 2 AM, then 5 AM, then going to work. I believe that most people found that they had more time with their family because instead of being at work 8-12 hours during the day, they were only sleeping 6-7, and were home when their kids were getting up, going to school, coming home, etc.

  • Mixed feelings about giving money to houseless people
  • My experiences have been where I've been eating outside at a restaurant, and someone asks me for money. I tell them to order anything off the menu, and I'll pay. Every single one has turned me down. This has been at least 3 times in Orlando. I have also spent some time in the poorer parts of town, and I work in a hospital where many come. Even having gotten to know some homeless people and respecting them does not make me more inclined to give money to strangers.

  • Reddit Goes Nuclear, Removes Moderators of Subreddits That Continued To Protest
  • Meta is doing great if all you care about is liking pictures of your nieces and nephews. That's not totally fair, they do allow niche communities to post information and share photos. But there's no where near the thought provoking discussion that Reddit or Lemmy provide.

  • Let's show him.
  • The problem is that Reddit relies on highly motivated and tech literate volunteers to keep subreddits from degenerating almost immediately into pure horseshit. Without some critical mass of capable moderators, I think the whole thing could implode.
