Nexus mods isn't shady, they inform user regarding data breach. They provide mods and have been serving mods ever since pre 2010 I believe (registered myself on that site back in 2014 ish).

Maybe slightly off-topic, I recommend to use Viva New Vegas guide as based on my testing the game is more stable and suitable base for modding up your New Vegas install, however also check out every mods you are going to install especially older mods pre-2018 (for me) as they sometime aren't optimized which may makes unstable issue with the game. From my experience, I can install several repack without any issues on my Mint install (using wine). If you overwhelmed, the easiest way is to add the .exe of your game as non-steam game through the steam and the proton will handle the rest assuming you won't find dependency issues, if you stumble across problem try to search protondb for solution.

Personally I run my games with wine because I couldn't figure out how to make use of bottles and lutris (ye I'm weird).

EDIT: Also you can run your modded games on Linux, so far I have tried modded nfs mw (2005) with hard+, underground2, and new vegas, they are works like on Windows.

Soldering is probably one of skill that opens up lot of possibility because most of time when dealing with pcbs (most electronic device overall) you have to desolder, replace the component, and solder new part in.

Next step is ID'ing unmarked component and understand datasheet so you know what you're dealing and how to deal with them.
