  • you guys hear about that one party which was hugely popular in germany

Evil people can accidentally do humane things under completely evil reasons. The question is always what the victim actually wants.

But I completely respect your ability to make this false comparison and then loudly express concern for it, as reminding us how evil can even coerce people into a bad decision for purely inhumane reasons of cost around the alternatives is a way we can work to avoid that kind of mis-use of this process. We need to be reminded every moment about it.

  • Thankfully we actually have it in the Netherlands, with some restrictions. I.e you do need to be clearly ‘suffering’ for a doctor to agree to it.

A judge in a region of Canada just ruled a girl of 27 may under-go Medical Assistance in Dying (aka assisted dying) when the only overt afflictions present are ADHD and Autism.

Are we enabling suicide, or are we merely enabling dignified suicide? When someone chooses to die - 6 times as often for boys - one of two things are gonna happen: they'll be assisted or they won't be. The result is the same, but one way has more dignity and less collateral fall-out.

I think we don't gauge suffering like olympic judges gauge figure skating, and instead we just allow people to choose.

  • I talk to my beautiful wife, but she's a neurotypical accounting genius, so I know half the shit I say sounds like a child talking about brontosauruses.

Mom somehow feigns interest and I never fully clue in. Teach a 75 year old woman about kubernetes? Ok. Walk her through upgrading her video card over the phone? Sure! It's only after that I realize she just wants to hear my voice.

  • This.

OP, if your mother is still with us, give her a call. Maybe just ask her how her day was. Maybe save your stuff for a call tomorrow.

I'm calling my mom tomorrow. She's like 1% fuddy now and tells the same stories, but she really likes those stories.

  • There's only two words with the 'phile' ending that is sexual that I can think of. But audiophile, videophile, and a host of others use that ending in the context of a preference or attraction: nemophile has nothing to do with animated fish, for instance. Hemophilia is another example of a commonplace word that is definitely not sexual.

I want to think the average person knows there's no sex in halophilia, but we could be overestimating.

  • Somehow, drivers started forgetting to check things. In this day of computing magic it seems hard for them to say "is none of my route under 13 feet tall?" And signs and maps don't work, I guess.

Edit: eyeballs too, for to strike that bridge you have to drive past this sign and not see it: https://maps.app.goo.gl/jmUPgCoZPXnTrevS6

  • It's like we didn't learn from the user-fee drop during COVID and how that (and a minor ransomware attack) all but gutted the service.

But I also vehemently disagree with using public money for private profit, like every other Public/Private/Partnership already does (see:BCFerries). Make it public and free to use; or private and 100% user-fee supported so it has no tax teat, it can go bankrupt and THEN be public and free to use.

  • CNN has been doing it for years

CNN sits more to the center, though, so it's not a stretch for them.

And maybe it's okay to be centrist, as long as we avoid whackadoo stuff like "teaching the controversy", and discuss the more straightforward wrong-headed stuff while avoiding the nutball wrong-headed stuff. Outline how cost-effective services is met through consolidation and results-based goals and not through firing the inspectors and requiring everyone to pay everything separately so fat-cat buddies will send kick-backs in thanks.

  • Maybe because I’m older idk, but boy and girl make me think of children.

I'm so old that I don't sprinkle my comments with kid-pidgin like 'idk', and I don't equate 'girl' with 'young girl'. Bat Girl, Girl Friday, Ring Girl, "I married a girl right out of college"; it's about context.

  • The rule about noods isn't just a rule for half our population. The victim-shaming in the next panel really launders the issue, though. I'm left now wondering whether the writer intentionally equated exhibitionism with just trying to walk home, and what that means for the thesis.
