  • Alexi keeps getting play on Fox because he is one of a very small number prominently pro-Trump voices in soccer. There are so many better commentators they could put in there who had great careers with the US and/or in the United States -- Ale Bedoya, Bill Hamid, Diego Valeri, heck I bet even Sam Mewis could learn the boys' names in time -- but they're not white republican men. Watching Telemundo is much more enjoyable.

Iran soccer team leaves note at SoFi Stadium thanking L.A. for World Cup hospitality

  • Anakin would be proud: not just the men, but the women and the children too — Marta is one behind for the women, and the u20 World Cup records are Javier Seviola and Christine Sinclair, both with 11.

  • Argentinians celebrating triumph over their arch-rivals Brazil as Messi takes the record for most World Cup goals from Marta. I think he’d be wise to bank a cushion, because I don’t think she’s going to take that lying down, and the World Cup next year is in Brazil.

  • I don't have a concrete answer to your question, but it does sound an awful lot like you're getting xckd 2501'd:

  • I am cynical enough to believe that had fent caused fewer overdose deaths, the DEA would have been more enthusiastic about preventing its distribution and sale.

  • You have a sunnier read on the situation than I, which is probably better for your health. For instance, you say:

At first blush, this sounds like the US has committed to giving Iran $300 billion. But from what I’ve heard, this isn’t what’s going on. Instead, what it means is America will no longer stand in the way of private companies and other nations investing in the Iranian economy.

My read is that we've committed to giving $300b to companies owned by Trump and his buddies to claim to build stuff in Iran, which, as we've seen with the reflecting pool bid, will likely be very expensive relative to their actual value delivered.

Also, I'm not sure how well the yellow highlights in the pull quotes on a yellow background reads to low-sight readers. I might run it through an accessibility color checker to make sure you're hitting wcag aa.

  • I try to join all of the fediverse services to give em a fair shake. I haven’t tried Helos yet, and I can’t get into the wanderer instance I’m most interested in, but I’ve tried all the big ones: mastodon, loops, pixelfed, bookwyrm, funkwhale, etc. I’m a social media nerd so I like to stay up-to-date on what folks are doing in the space, and the fediverse is the one that most closely aligns with my values.

  • Just a heads’ up — the majority of accounts that will see this post aren’t from lemmy.world. For example, I’m from feddit.online. Your posts are federated, which means your instance, lemmy.world, passes your post to our instances, where we see them.

  • I don’t have any idea how competitive the Finnish league is compared to the Pdub, but this sounds good:

The 29-year-old from Helsinki, Finland, is a three-time Olympian and longtime member of the Finnish National Team, winning Olympic bronze in 2018 and competing in the 2014 and 2026 Olympic Winter Games. She has medaled in all three IIHF Women’s World Championships in which she competed, winning bronze in 2015 and 2017, and silver in 2019. Nuutinen has spent the last three seasons with Finland’s Kiekko-Espoo, winning two straight championships and Auroraliiga scoring titles. She posted 63 points (27G, 36A) in 28 regular-season games in 2025-26 and added a playoff-high 25 points (13G, 12A) in 13 postseason contests.

  • The best solution to homelessness is also the cheapest: building homes

While providing housing and supportive services is a more humane option for elected officials grappling with the homelessness crisis, it can also be cost effective. Jackson said that in 2025, the county estimated that it cost roughly $41,000 to fund one unit of permanent supportive housing for a year. In contrast, during the same year it cost the City of Seattle $386.36 per day to house someone in the King County Jail – a cost that works out to more than $141,000 per year.

  • The automated check for offside on Spain's stoppage time goal took forever -- isn't the idea of a semi-automated system that it is faster?

  • If you're willing to engage with the analogy of dollars as neurons, what do you think the economy is thinking about?

edit: I like this because if you think of monetary exchange as neuron activation then the mega-rich hoarding wealth is the biggest inhibition to the ability of the economy to think properly, since their money doesn't participate.

  • Every outlet covering this is despondent because Ballard Link is fully dead, and yet everyone at Sound Transit is acting like nothing's changed and there is no problem and I cannot make heads or tails of the discrepancy:

"The board action to update the system plan did not kill or cancel or delete or defer or postpone Ballard project," Constantine said. "To the contrary, it kept Ballard on schedule with an investment of $18.1 billion, and that plan that the board adopted gives us the framework and the guidance and the tools needed to roll up our sleeves and to work on solving this puzzle of that money. $300 million was set aside specifically for completing the full design process from the Seattle Center to Market Street, which means that over the next several years that part of the project will proceed identifying cost savings and choices that can be made and innovations that can be implemented."

We have confidence that our fans are pretty smart and they will be fans of their team no matter who’s wearing that jersey.
