Reverse Proxy vs VPN: How do you access your home-server?
  • I know cloudflare has a free tier and allows you to put rules like this in place. AFAIK you'd have to use them as DNS at least in order to use this feature. I use Cloudflare tunnels and access to facilitate remote access to my home-server, and I know I have this same rule in place.

  • Pronouns in profile
  • I seem to remember years ago some people listing their pronouns by she/her/hers. I think she/her, she/they, he/him, etc. is just a shortening of listing all three while also being inclusive. As you mentioned some individuals are more fluid and may go by she and they but prefer she so it is listed as she/they.

  • Is this group already dead?
  • I wish there was a way to see the posts on Reddit, and have them show along side posts in Lemmy but I also would prefer it to be interacting with real people on here. I think that's what I like more about the fediverse, the people here actually care.

  • Nuking old Reddit accounts
  • Thanks for this! I finally decided to nuke my Reddit comments. I was mostly a lurker anyway, and I will probably still keep the account. Its too bad they have gone the way of Digg, I loved that site.

  • What would you do if you won the lottery?
  • I'd get a house for me and my family. Make sure my parents have a house that meets their needs as well. I'd hire a personal trainer to get in shape and take a few months off work while I figure out what to do next.

  • [SERIOUS] How do you do figure out what job you want after high school?
  • I always liked the idea of going to a college that had a program with a work term so you can see if you like it and also get some experience. I would say talk to some people in areas that you are interested in and see if you find any jobs you may look doing.

  • [Need advice] My first home server
  • Second this. Start with an old desktop and see where you land. it's a good starting place to see what services you like using/need. Then you can spec out a second machine to solve any pain points you have.

  • What's the general consensus on making private fediverse instances?
  • I know a few people who have done this with Mastodon and it works quite well so far. Just like email, it doesn't really matter where it's hosted as long as it's being respectful and not sending out spam.

That being said, AFAIK you can't transfer a Lemmy account between instances yet, so if you ever change your mind and want to move to another instance, you may have to create a new account.

  • Lemmy and the Fediverse give me faith in humanity
  • This reminds me of how Reddit was after switching from Digg. It feels smaller and more organic and a much more friendly environment. I just feel like I used Reddit for a lot of information and searches for troubleshooting or how to purposes. That vast wealth of knowledge feels like it may be lost.

Same with moving from twitter to a mastodon instance, feels like twitter when it was young.

Geeky and sarcastic, but never too cool for dad jokes. I'm a proud father of two and a member of the LGBTQ+ community. I'll gladly debate about anything from Sony vs. Microsoft to Kirk vs. Picard, but at the end of the day, I'm all about inclusivity and respecting different opinions.
