Way to reduce E-Waste
  • It's hard sometimes, I needed a new laptop to get a better CPU for video encoding. I now have my older laptop, which is actually a hand me down, so it's old, but it's going to replace my even older laptop that's running a 2nd gen i3. So that's going to be the one I will likely bring to an eWaste site as it will no longer serve me. Sure I could keep it around as a spare, you never know, but I really doubt that will happen.

All my laptops are running some form of Linux, except one. That's used to run turbo tax (I know) as the windows software is typically much more affordable over the website version. So that saves me like $50 each year.

Anyway, eventually I'll need to toss my old pixel xl as the battery only last about 45 minutes and I think lineage isn't able to update it, I didn't check the last few months. I was planning to have it be my kids first tablet, but a battery replacement is around $75 I think... Just seems not worth it.

  • Way to reduce E-Waste
  • My trouble is battery health of older phones and laptops. I typically purchase scratch and dents from Dell outlet and for phones wait for the battery to only make it 4hours before it needs a charge.

  • Should people get preferential treatment because they have kids?
  • This might be unique to each parent as well. Some children do require extra attention and it is very difficult to managed work time in.

With most schools letting kids out around 3pm it's not easy to keep the children occupied before the work day is finished. This leaves parents either on a work call with kids heard in the background or working late at night al week.

Think of it as if the person is a caretaker and a full time employee at your company. It's basically two full times just that happen to overlap during the day.

I think calling it a privilege is really unfair but if the people are missing work and not meeting deadlines then management needs to step in and work out a solution. Work life balance is hard.

  • Better late than never: SVT-AV1 v2.2.x Deep Dive
  • Great article that really helps me understand the various presets of AV1. I re-encoded a 8gb 1080 h264 with AV1 preset 4 and crf 22. Came out just under 800mb. I do see some compression artifacts in the resulting video, but nothing serious and the bandwidth savings is great.

I have also found that encoding speed doesn't change much between presents as much as just scaling the output to 720 instead of 1080. Which is what I do for files that I'm ok with being standard HD res to get that almost 2x encoding speed.

  • Which movies have you seen this week?
  • Lion king 2 and lion king 1 1/2

My take: Lion King 2 has some rushed parts and other parts are too long. Overall, ok but forgettable addition to the series.

Lion King 1 1/2, starts a little rough for me, but once Timon leaves home the movie takes off and it's a good time. Recommend a watch if you have the first movie burned into memory.

  • Can raspberry pi 3b+ run a jellyfin server?
  • I found using Kodi helped resolve video codec support in my case. It was for AV1 nlon the Chromecast 4k, which doesn't support AV1, it seems to mostly work for smaller AV1 encodes. I guess it is using software decoding.

  • Installed #GrapheneOS several days ago on my Pixel 8. It works great without any Google services!
  • Maybe the switch for me would require staging on a burner pixel that supported. I have a lot of shopping apps, that I may not need, but need some time on the testing phone to make sure everything works before taking the deep dive.

This is also how I made the switch off windows. Stagged it on a space older laptop to see what's what.

    I'll get there...

  • YesPlz beans
    www.yesplz.coffee YES PLZ COFFEE

The best and most fun coffee subscription service — a no corners cut bag of the best fresh roasted coffee delivered to your door.

    YES PLZ COFFEE

Trying out their blend and just opened my first bag. It's their 295 mix. I like it, lite and easy to drink It tastes like coffee. Did an aeropress brew and will try V60 next time. I will say the beans gave off an interesting smell that made me nervous about how it would come out, but all is good.

I never heard of this place, but it was recommended in another post. I'll likely keep the subscription, at least for another few bags to see how it goes.

What's in your cup this week?

I'm doing a blend of Kona from a local store and whole food Kenya. It's a 70/30 of Kenya to Kona and taste great. The Kona alone I got taste and looks like really dark soil after a brew, so I picked a lite roast to see how it would go and I'm happy.

I haven't had too many Kenya coffees, but if you have a whole foods nearby this one tastes good to me.

    Stumptown Coffee Videos

I've been watching a bunch of the stumptown coffee brewing videos on YouTube. They are another great starting point for all of us. I tried their V60 and aeropress recipes and the coffee came out good. It tastes like coffee. Lol

Anyway wanted to share in case someone hasn't seen them. Enjoy

    Media Skipping after recent releases

My Google TV picked up the latest versions of the jellyfin app and now a few of my 4k movies are no longer working as expected. I'm getting pauses and it looks almost like a buffering issue. I checked with my NAS and see network to the TV to be around 9MB/s which is fine for a wired connection. I used to be on wifi, but started having the same issue there after the update so I loved to a wired connection. Some 4k movies are good over wired, but some are in buffering hell.

Am I alone with this issue ? Idk. I ordered a 1gb USB adapter for the tv as a last attempt to validate it isn't the network connection. Will be here this weekend and will update with the results from that.

--- Got to tv on GB ethernet and I see it pulling the file at around 50MB/s which is great, but no difference. Maybe I did something wrong on the encode... Not sure. Let me try a re-encode of the movie... Idk

    Hario Drip Kettle Air
    www.hario-usa.com V60 Drip Kettle AIR

This little kettle is perfect for beginners or travelers. It’s durable and heat resistant. Perfect for brewing small batches of coffee. The material is very lightweight and gives the user more control over the pour stream. This kettle is tiny and can fit in any cabinet, drawer or camping bag.  ...

    V60 Drip Kettle AIR

I recently picked up a V60 to take a stab at pour over at home. I was getting ok drinks out, but my pour control was all over the place. It was too fast and not very accurate as I was using my existing hot water kettle.

I hate replacing things that work and I didn't want to get a new kettle just for coffee making. I started looking for some small kettle options where I can put my hot water on and pour out. A lot of the products in this category are either too affordable where the handles come off or too costly. I was hesitant to get the Hario Air due to Hoffman's review, but it really seemed to check all my boxes.

After making a few cups, it is amazing. I can't get as close to the grinds as a normal kettle, but I'm not to far. Control is great, but the neck thickness causes me to bump the V60 sometimes, need more practice. At any rate, I love this and it's easy to store in the cabinet when not in use.

TLDR: Great product if you have an existing hot water kettle you don't want to replace just to make pour over.

    Crooked finger print sensor

I was sitting in my car the other day and was able to tilt my phone just right under the sunlight to see the two sensors under the screen. This is a pixel 7. I noticed that the finger print sensor was crooked while the top sensor was pretty straight. It got me thinking for all the people with issues against the finger print sensor, I wonder if theirs is more mis aligned, or maybe this is unrelated.

I check the photos on iFixit and the sensor looks straight there, but it's getting the back. Anyway, would be interesting if others could take a look at their sensor to see if this is a common thing.

Took a photo with my flashlight and modified it on Snapseed to make it easier to see. It is possible this is normal, but never know. !

    Starting Grind Settings Chart

I'm wondering if we should start a sticky post which contains everyone's collection of Bean/Grinder+Setting/Brew method information as a reference. It's always good to have a nice starting point.

I will update as comments come up.

    Aieve Silicone Coffee Hopper Bellow

When I placed the order for a new Baratza Encore ESP, I also picked up this bellow for the hopper to push the left over grinds out of the machine. I posted a picture of the grinder earlier this month.

After two weeks of use, I needed to clean the grinder since I'm switching from flavored beans to non, there were no grinds in the machine. Sure there are some fines on the burrs that need to be brushed off, but not much. I'm impressed with this product and recommend it for anyone that has this grinder.

You can actually see the left over grinds fall into the bin when you press the bellow. Works great especially if you do the water spritz to minimize static.

    👍

    Parent's Bitter Coffee

At visiting my parent's this holiday weekend I tired to gently tell my parents that their coffee brew is very bitter. The response I get back is something like, " I like it strong."

I wasn't too sure how to respond, but then they told me my coffee is to watery. 🤔 I told them it's not that is watery, but it's a light roast and not bitter tasting.

So my question is how do you convince someone that bitter coffee is not good coffee? I might bring my scale next time to help measure and perfect the coffee brew there. Maybe even see about cleaning their been grinder, which I think has never been cleaned.

    Oh well.

Update: Thanks for all the tips and thoughts. I agree with basically everything posted here and sorry no butter (I fixed the title)

    Brave using network when idle

I wanted to try out the desktop version of the Brave browser. Its setup according to the privacy guide directions and I have sendoff usage data disabled, but if I open the browser sitting on the home page, windows is reporting 100KB ofdataa going out every 5 or so seconds.

Running the same test with Edge, no network usage is reported.

The only extention on Brave is bitwarden, which is also installed on edge.

Any thoughts? This is the IP it is sending to: 104.18.12.33

Edit: on reboot of process, I see the hostname: ec2-35-163-26-5.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com
