How can I play videos downloaded from my computer on a TV without network connectivity features?
  • The firmware explicitly states it's for photos only, and I tried my luck using both mp4 and webm formats.

  • How can I play videos downloaded from my computer on a TV without network connectivity features?
  • I think you're misunderstanding, the TV's firmware literally states that it can only be used for photos. I tried accessing both webm and mp4 to try my luck, but nothing.

  • How can I play videos downloaded from my computer on a TV without network connectivity features?

Sorry if this doesn't belong here, more than happy to be pointed in the right direction if it doesn't.

I wanna do movie nights with friends where we watch movies together in the living room on my TV. I have a DVD player and VCR I got from the thrift shop as well as a few movies for both. However, I was thinking it would also be fun to expand the options available by downloading a bunch of public domain movies to play on the TV. Only issue is figuring how I'd work that all out.

The TV lacks any network connectivity features. While it has a USB slot, it can literally only detect pictures and set them up for slideshows. Even tried putting some video files on to test and it won't detect at all. Also because my computer is a desktop, connecting it directly to the TV from the other room is a no-go.

Is there some sort of device that serves this kind of purpose? Like something I can download videos to, and then connect it to my TV in a similar sense you would a DVD or VCR and be able to choose the content on the device using a remote? I'd really appreciate the help and pointers if this is something that exists.

Watched this all the time on Treehouse TV as a kid. Apparently it was originally on TVO? Crazy how I remember it so much despite it only having a single season apparently.

  • Still don't fully agree. The environmental impact of shipping from overseas is costly, so investing in means to create product here rather than overseas should be seen as a necessity.

We grow tomatoes, cucumbers, cannabis, and some bell peppers in green houses here, and should invest in expanding those options available to Canadian consumers.

    Alternatives for Roblox?

I just like Roblox for the social interaction of being able to chat and hang out with people online. I don't need the game to be quite like Roblox, just want a good social experience is all.

Was thinking of swapping to VRChat, but the annoyance there is that they're also American. Anything worth checking out?

    Confused about Federation
  • Immediate thought that comes to mind is that you can follow the Lemmy and Pixelfed accounts from your Mastodon, which would give you some ease in accessing their posts via Mastodon, and then boost the posts from there.

Hope that helps a bit, tbf cross-platform interactions like this are something I have very limited experience with.

  • Confused about Federation
  • Not entirely. While you can interact with content from other social platforms like Mastodon and PeerTube from Lemmy, federation is best experienced when you utilize platforms with similar use cases.

For example, the link aggregators (Reddit-likes) on the fediverse are Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin, and until recently, Lotide. Each of these platforms have similar looks and purpose with slight differentiation. While you can communicate with video streaming or microblogging like PeerTube and Mastodon respectively, it's best to stay within the link aggregators and make a new account for those purposes.

To give an example with microblogging on the Fediverse, there's also a number of options. Biggest one is Mastodon, but others include Misskey and it's endless forks, Smithereen, Pleroma/Akkoma, Mitra, Threads, etc. all with their own interesting quirks. While they can interact with Lemmy and whatnot, their best interactions are going to be with similar-purposed platforms.

  • Genuinely surprised Smith is that low. Like, if it took into account how people nationally felt about Smith I'd see this as expected, but the Angus Reid poll referenced seems to be based on the approval ratings of the premiers by their constituents.

I swear not long back Smith had a 60% approval rating here, which is absurd to think about as expected as it is. Wonder if the podcast surfacing pissed people off.

I want to go to a Calgary Roughnecks game, but they seem to use Ticketmaster for online ticket purchases. Any idea if it's possible to purchase tickets in-person?
  • Thanks! Hopefully that's still an option, so I'll likely ask the next time I'm in the area or have time on my hands.

Been getting interested in possibly watching Lacrosse the last few months, and want to give it a shot. Just annoyed that the team uses Ticketmaster for buying tickets when I'd much rather use an alternative. Just curious if anybody knows if offline options exist.

Howdy! What can I do to help around here?
  • Will do! I'll look at the smaller communities when I can. Mouse is borked at the moment, so using the Raccoon app on mobile and NumLock keys on the desktop to get around for the time being.

  • Six in 10 Canadians want to scrap contract for U.S. warplanes: Nanos poll

  • Should we make a list of MPs who have Mastodon or BlueSky?

So the other day I was in a conversation talking about the MP for my former riding, Greg McLean. I by no means am a Conservative voter, but of the Conservative MPs I can give respect to, Greg McLean is towards the top of the list considering the social issues he's worked on, and his engagement with the community.

I was checking out his website and shockingly found that he has a BlueSky has one of his social platforms. Not only that, but he also uses it regularly, posting multiple times per day. Now this could just be his publicity team rather than him directly, but it still caught me off guard in a positive way that it was a platform he utilized.

It had me thinking. What other MPs use BlueSky and/or Mastodon? I feel having a list would be a useful resource especially in asking other members of parliament by legitimizing the idea of providing a method of following them on social media without using X or Facebook.

Charlie Angus🟧: The #elbowsup / resistance tour is on the road.
  • Why why WHY must Charlie Angus be stepping out of politics? I like Singh as a person, but he lacks proper leadership skills that the NDP desperately needs right now.

I have seen Angus' name in the media equally, if not more than Singh, and that's incredibly impressive given that Singh HAS to be covered by the media as a party leader. Angus doesn't. The petitions he's put out about Tesla, Elon Musk, and how Canada should respond to tariffs, on top of his GREAT speech denouncing the U.S. government is EXACTLY what we need right now.

If Singh dropped as NDP leader and Charlie Angus took his place, I would vote for the NDP without so much as flinching and do whatever I could in my heavily Conservative district to get whoever the NDP candidate is in parliament. This man is incredible and it's a damn shame he's not party leader.

  • I'd love for this community to be more lively
  • Not a fan of the Senators and don't follow hockey much, however came across this in my feed since I sort by New and Local by default.

The community looks kinda dead. Lemmy has a disadvantage to Reddit in that the userbase is a lot smaller, so more specific communities such as specific NHL teams need a little more heavy lifting to get them off the ground. It's a self-perpetuating problem unfortunately. People don't engage with the community because there's no activity, but there's no activity because people don't engage with the community.

You could post news about the Senators every now and again to show people there are others on Lemmy who are just as interested in the Senators as you are. Heck, depending on if you're up to it, you might even be able to ask the other mods or an instance admin to be a mod of the community after a bit of posting activity. Just on first glance it looks like the community could attract more users if the sidebar was beefed up a tad.

  • Now Launching Maple Music!

In celebration of the Junos recently, I've decided to make this community to help highlight Canadian music, and the incredible talents of the Canadian music scene!

My recent thoughts of making a community for Canadian music are not the first occurrence of me wanting to do so. Every now and again I'll work on adding things to MusicBrainz. I had a close friend who unfortunately passed a few years ago who was involved in the Edmonton hiphop scene, and in working on adding Edmonton-based hiphop to MusicBrainz, I came across a number of acts that I felt deserved more recognition than they received.

I hope that in making this community, gaps become filled between Canadians and their exposure to Canadian music talent. Even with Canadian Content laws, a lot of acts don't receive the exposure they deserve, part of this being owed to the digital media age and music streaming services.

Please forgive the community looking bare for the time being without a community icon or banner. I'm currently without a mouse for my computer using my keyboard to navigate my computer. When I have the opportunity to do so however, I will be adding those ASAP. Please feel free to provide any ideas for the images in the meantime.

Plans for the community include the following:

    • A megathread of Canadian musicians and where from Canada they hail from.
    • A megathread of free and/or Creative Commons releases and music by Canadian musicians for those who are unable to afford fiscally supporting musicians who have paid releases
    • A megathread of Canadian music magazines and media based on locality and/or genre.
    • Weekly topic threads. These topics will be questions asking about your favourite Canadian musicians in x genre, what Canadian songs have emotionally moved you the most, musicians you feel were robbed of a Juno, etc..
    • Event-specific topic threads. This will likely be used mainly for future Juno awards to discuss Juno nominees, winners, the live event, and closing discussion the day or two after.

Once I get this technical issue out of the way, I look forward to helping make this an active and thriving community here. Cheers!

Ideas where I can get a free computer mouse in this city?

    Howdy y'all,

Earlier today my mouse crapped out. I'd easily buy another, but unfortunately I am incredibly tight on funds for the rest of April.

Is there anywhere I can find a mouse for free? I really don't need anything special, just something that can navigate me around the monitor reasonably. Have set up NumLock keys for the time being and that's how I've been getting by for the day on top of the Tab and Page Up/Down keys.

    Thanks in advance.
