Is it considered bad practice to expose selfhosted services on public internet?
  • Not sure of your setup but I use OpenVPN on my Android and have set it to whitelist apps so only the apps that need to use the VPN do so. You can also go the opposite and blacklist so all apps except those you specify use the VPN.

  • The electoral college was never intended to protect proportional representation. The whole idea of equal representation in the Senate was to avoid high population states running roughshod over the smaller ones. This obviously dilutes the influence of higher population states and amplifies the smaller ones at the electoral college.

The system is not broken though. It does exactly what it was originally intended to do 240 years ago. You just don't agree with it's intention and results

  • People who destroyed their health within a short period of time, what happened?
  • Thanks. Fortunately my recovery has been good and it 100% could've been worse. The mortality rate for Boerhaaves Syndrome (esophagus rupture) is pretty high for the first 48 hours. Then with the sepsis, I came pretty close to not making it a few times as well.

Even after everything I went through, the drop foot is the thing with the biggest day to day impact for me. And even that is the left foot so I'm still able to drive independently. And if the nerve doesn't repair and the foot doesn't recover, I've come to terms with it and I'll get by.

And one positive actually came out of it. I've struggled with my weight my whole life and this episode caused me to lose about 180 pounds. I could almost argue that my overall health is actually a little better now than it was before all this.

  • I stopped using it because it wasn't the best for the use case I was looking for but I'll plug SilverBullet. It is a well made program and seems very powerful from what I've seen

  • I was having swallowing issues. Food would get stuck from time to time. I wouldn't choke and could still breathe. My ENT told me it was due to reflux at night causing throat irritation. I didn't take it super seriously because it didn't seem like a big issue.

Then in December of 2020, I had something get stuck in my throat during dinner. I figured it was like it had always been and I would just drink some water and get it to swallow. I did...but when I did my throat ruptured and split where it meets the stomach. I ended up with sepsis and spent 50 days in the ICU and 322 days in the hospital. All told I went home 357 days after I left for the ER that night. My stomach was removed and I developed drop foot due to nerve damage, likely during one of my close to 3 dozen operations and now have to walk with an orthotic foot brace.

I had to change the way I eat as I can't really get enough doing the standard 3 meals a day. I tend to graze small amounts throughout the day. My leg may or may never recover. There's no real way to tell, it's all dependent on nerve regrowth which happens pretty slowly. That has impacted playing with my kids, swimming, playing golf, etc.

  • I get the below message and nothing happens. Then about 60 seconds later Juice gives a timeout error.

ssh_socket_connect: Nonblocking connection socket: 98 ssh_connect: Socket connecting , now waiting for the callbacks to work

Using JuiceSSH on my phone, I'm able to connect to my device without any problems when I'm on my home Wi-Fi. However, when off WiFi and connected to my VPN, the server doesn't connect. I'm still able to access the services it's running, but can't SSH into the server itself.

Edit: I thought I answered everyone's questions but I'm not seeing the answers so I'm posting the info here.

I'm using the built in VPN service in my router. It uses the OpenVPN protocol.

Edit 2: Using the same VPN config file, I'm able to access the server using Putty on my laptop. So I'm wondering if it is a Juice specific issue.

  • Can anyone ELI5 or link a decent reference? I'm pretty new to self hosting and now that I've finally got most of my services running the way I want, I live in constant fear of my system crashing

  • How do you guys do sensitive document storage?
  • My Paperless-ngx is behind my VPN. My phone connects to my VPN automatically when I disconnect from my home WiFi, so I have continuous access with no actions on my part. I'm hoping that's secure enough for my use. I'm in the same boat as far as personal documents and couldn't bring myself to make it open to the world.
