What nerd terms should one know while on lemmy?
  • An instance is a specific computer a person uses .

Let's say lem.ee is still up and you login there and have an account there but we both browse the rpgmemes on .ttrpg

Lem.ee is an instance, lemmy.world is an instance the .ttrpg computer is an instance. Like different email servers , these computers all talk with each other to make it seamless. All of the computers use the Lemmy software.

Now lem.ee has shut down, users can't login there , but a new Lemmy instance could be created by someone and connect to the federated network.

But a university might run it's own instance of Lemmy, giving students an account and have their own communities which aren't publicly shared and they aren't federated.

People can say there's an issue with federation where people may leave comments on another computers community but they're not visible to users browsing others. E.g. users on lemmy.workd might see it and .ttrpg but not anywhere else. They are meant to but an issue like slow communication is preventing it not permissions as such.

A fork is a different version of software. Open source software licences allw people to modify and re release the programs.

two developers might have different visions of what a software should look like , and if they want to split and make their own versions, that would be a fork in the development of the program.

  • “Thousands of Giant Eggs Found” in Underwater Volcano
  • Apologies for the flippancy in the comment. I wasn't questioning the species found or quality of the work, or trying to will something fictional into reality.

After seeing the 'Unleashes Terrifying Discovery' and 'Scientists in Total Shock' I did an internal what if based on some things happening over the last few years, such as the level of consideration given to stopping a hurricane with a nuke without any apparent consideration of fallout and thought, 'yepp. that would fit right in'

The comment could have been seen as something along the lines of a flat earther and is something which on reflection something i shouldn't have added to the c/science community.

  • Type of key? And how to get broken part out of lock?
  • This looks like a similar setup to some security doors I've messed with.

Edit: what about using a unfolded paperclip and push from the other side. The plan I had when I started writing this probably won't work as accessing the key cylinder will only likely get access the keyhole.

Edit2 id also hit it with a spray from a can of WD-40 (lubricant) and hope that helps work things loose.

Below is probably useless but it was my train if thought initially.

They have a removable part so the locks can be rekeyed easily by a locksmith by replacing some pins on the inside to match the keys.

Edit 3 if removing fails and you need to replace a part, you probably could get away with just replacing the locking part and not the whole handle mechanism.

In the ones Ive used a screw on the door matches up holding the locking cylinder component. Probably the one just above the deadbolt.

Try unscrewing this to see if the cylinder the key is stuck in can be removed.

Go very carefully as I don't know what is actually holding the stack of pins which match your key and if these pins fall out, finding which go where will be very hard and very fiddly.

  • Edit: Solved-Having trouble creating a new community (suspect no one else can currently create a community)

I tried, but when I clicked create, it didn't proceed or give an error message, more details below.

I'm looking to create a new community, so i clicked on the 'Create Community' button on the top.

I entered in a community name (all lowercase, no spaces) and then a display name.

I added a short description and selected english.

I clicked create and got a hourglass like icon for about a second and then nothing. A new page didnt appear, i checked my profile and cannot see the new community name.

I checked a post a few hours ago in Lemmy World support and someone else is having trouble.

Ive also tried on two devices, desktop & mobile.

p.s. on mobile there is a issue that could result in butting heads where if you hover over the create community textbox it gives text of 'lowercase, underscores and no spaces' but these constrains are not listed in the ? next to Create community. When i was on mobile i wasnt able to get the hovertext and if it was my first time creating a community, i may not have been able to see this info.

    Thanks.

What is a community you like and would recommend to others and why?
    lemmy.world Superbowl - Lemmy.World

For owls that are superb. Superbowl - Lemmy.World

Was out on a walk earlier today and wanted to do something sort of Christmas related and try and help people pass on virtual presents in the form of community suggestions.

What is a community you think more people should be subscribed to and why?

My answer is https://lemmy.world/c/superbowl ( Superb Owl, not Superbowl. It's a community about birds, not americal football) and there is frequently high quality images of owls posted which I find cute and I wish I could take shots like that. P.s. I know birds aren't everyone's thing, but I wanted to use it as an example.

And I the community is NSFW but the name isn't obvious, flag it as NSFW.

I was out recently noticed two Tawnys in a tree, i was surpirsed as the last i saw any was around a year ago and it was just one where i’d always seen two together.

These two looked very tired. The one on the left was more awake and i felt like i was being glared at. ‘Dude, I’m watching you, I don’t like you and if you come closer, we might have to move, and we really, really don’t want to do that’.

So i came close enough to get this shot and left them in peace but am keeping an eye out for them the next time in the area.

Mods: Sorry if this doesnt fit the sub, but I think people commonly mistake Tawny's for Owls, and they're the closest animals to owls Im likely to see. The image is Original Content (taken by me). Let me know and i'll post to birding or just pics.

Not something urgent, but the Aussie parliament passed new laws yesterday and it could impact Lemmy.world (in a year)
www.abc.net.au World-first social media ban on children in 'Land of Kangaroos' makes global headlines

Australia's social media ban for children makes headlines around the world, including as far away as Russia, as articles question how it could work and whether similar laws would be introduced elsewhere.

World-first social media ban on children in 'Land of Kangaroos' makes global headlines

Hi Lemmy.World Admins and Support Staff,

I like this place a lot and wanted to give you a heads up pollies down under passed some new laws.

The govt wants a ban on social media for everyone under 16. This week was the last sitting week of parliament and a few bills were passed by both houses and are set to become law. (See link).

I'm not after any immediate reaction or actions, but looking to bring it to your attention for you to discuss (edit:internally) how you would react. I haven't seen the legislation and don't know how this is meant to be mechanized and it seems pretty hard to do.

Some other tech giants have already made statements as this appears to be a worldwide first.

Edit: I might have a look at the laws text and put some details here as a comment

[OC] Sydney CBD, Opera House and botanical gardens viewed from the harbour +2 more pics in body.

Behind the Sydney Opera House is Circular Quay, which is the hub of ferry traffic in the harbour. There's also private vessels, cruise ships, , a floating bar and the occasional military vessel.

There are several classes of ferry in the fleet, including rivercats (on the left) which have a shallow draft as they travel up the river to Paramatta.

    !

The largest class of Sydney Ferry are the Freshwater class which travels to Manly and back near the Sydney Heads which can lead to a bumpy ride if there's a swell. !

What are some parts of your agreements you consider non-negotiable? Or something you decided to add because you learnt the hard way?

I recently did some freelance work and due to a misunderstanding of what would actually be delivered, I decided to draft up a short but written agreement for future clients.

Although a written discussion was had about what was to be done, it appears both parties had different ideas about what would happen.

Im largely dealing with a client I get on well with and wanted to keep things simple and the template I've got is:-

    Event name:

    Event dates:

Overview of services to be be provided onsite:

Specific services (if any) : (shots considered essential)

    Dependencies:

Deliverables: (quantity, format , delivery timeline)

Copyright: (stay with photographer or rights to be signed over)

Post event services: (any editing that may take significant time)

Cost and payment schedule: (booking fee, payment milestones)

Limitation of Liability: under no circumstances shall I be considered liable for more than the agreed cost of services to be provided.

Travel arrangements: (these might be omitted from what is sent to the client but should be considered)

    Accommodation:

    Food / Incidentals:

Is there anything you would add ?

Edit: if it was something I'd consider for use with the general public then I would go through a lot more rigour and probably involve lawyers.
