TIL about raisin juice concentrate - some truly Goldbergian food science
  • Absolutely not a joke! I was eating some granola bar and noticed in the ingredient list. I thought it was some ridiculous labeling thing and had to look it up. The bit you quoted was what I figured it was, but it still sounds absurd on the surface.

  • When I read the link, I immediately said to myself "Well, I guess it's just like prune juice." But that still doesn't mean it doesn't seem strange on paper.

  • I plan on blowing my brains out soon.
  • They tell you your brain is broken and you'll never live a normal life without medication?

I was seeing a counselor years back and she made this point to me. "If you had a heart condition that could be treated with medication, would you take it? What makes taking care of your brain different?" I was really the simple bit of logic I needed to hear. Luckily, the meds worked with only a couple minor increases over the years. Medication is absolutely an avenue worth exploring.

Response: Here is a list of all the restaurants in specific city.

I don't think some polite pushback on that is unwarranted.

  • Started to move off Google (not strictly self-hosted)

  • What is your favorite movie, film, or show to watch this time of year, christmas or not?
  • Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Family Christmas are the only things I'll still require my kids to watch with us every year. They're just the best.

  • The Refreshments - Banditos (1996) [Alternative Rock]
  • I will always upvote The Refreshments. Those two albums are seriously underrated gems.

  • Concrete Blonde - Joey (Official Video)
  • Her vocal on the chorus is so powerful. The whole performance is heartbreaking and beautiful.

  • [Thread] Recommend me devastatingly sad songs? Please?
  • Lots of loss in my family in the last 10 years or so. As a result things like this are the most devastating for me. These two in particular are just gutting.

  • What's your favorite Christmas movie, and why?
  • Watch out for the icy patch!

I don't even recall seeing it as a kid in the 80s, but I found it once I had kids and it's absolutely our favorite to watch as a family. In fact, now that the kids are teenagers, this is probably the only one that will draw them out of their rooms to watch together still.

  • Right. I never pull the wrong one anymore because fan=fan and light=light. I know it's a stupid minor thing, but it's great.

  • what are some of the best purchases you've made ?
  • One of my favorite purchases in terms of usefulness, cost, and fun (relative) was these frigging ceiling fan pull chains. I saw them on some "things you didn't know you needed" list or something. But for less than $10, they have made my life infinitely easier and they do give me a little joy every time I pull on them.

  • Pearl Jam - Black (St Paul, MN, 2023-08-31)

Shit, I just need to share this with anyone who hasn't seen or heard it. The band sounds great, but the highlight is McCready putting everything he has into a solo he's played 1000 times over the last 30+ years. Fantastic.

The Refreshments - Down Together (1996)

Sadly relegated to "one hit wonder" status thanks to the success of the single "Banditos" (give your ID card to the border guard, now your alias says you're Captain Jean-Luc Picard), I always thought this followup was the better song. One of my favorites on an album loaded with great songs.

Dump - Pop Life (1998, Prince cover)

Was reminded of this album while listening to the first track of @ren@lemmy.world's new album. Dump is a side project from James McNew of Yo La Tengo. Quite honestly, this collection of Prince covers is all I've ever listened to, but it's great.

    Heatmiser - Pop in G (1996)

At this point, Elliott Smith had already released two solo albums and was a year away from a whole lot of people knowing his music thanks to Good Will Hunting.

I JUST started dipping my toes into Heatmiser, and I owe a long overdue apology to my roommate from 20 years ago, Bill. I didn't get your complete obsession with Elliott Smith at the time, but fuck if I don't now. I should have listened to you.

    Jellyfish - Baby's Coming Back (1990)

I had been aware of Jellyfish existing and that they were one of those important bands that never quite found the success they should have. But it wasn't until maybe last year that I spent any time listening to their albums.

Holy shit, I love this song so much. I've literally spent entire car rides just listening to it on repeat. The melody and vocal performance are addictive. The "knock three times" drums. That main little guitar riff. And the most 1990s of music videos!

Lincolnville - Kill the Show (1999)

Lincolnville (previously Car) was a band based around Portland, Maine in the late 90s. This song and another (Heavenly Calm) from the same album got a decent bit of radio play here. Our local alternative station was also a great supporter of local music.

Anyway, every few years, I rediscover this song and album and get obsessed with it all over again. To this day, I still can only make out about ⅓ of what he's saying.
