It's like any kind of scammer, grifter, con artist, etc; at some point they're doing more work than if they actually just did their jobs.
He probably got a promotion.
Usually if they don't announce his termination, he eas reassigned until things blow over.

I have been to a few union jobs. I don't like unions. I hate some of the folks there. They can't be fired unless they do something really stupid. So most end up doing bare minimum.
