I don’t think depressing content is a meme

There’s a subgenre of memes that was super popular on Reddit which was basically just depressing thoughts and information packed into a meme format. These memes don’t really add anything of value to any platform in my opinion and usually just make the reader feel bad, either because it highlights something negative, or because it is dystopian. It’s in a meme format, but what’s the point? Opponents of this thought process tend to say that we should let upvotes and downvotes decide - because if something is upvoted, then people must like it. The problem is negative emotions create more engagement on average, so upvotes aren’t an accurate reflection of what content is good.
