Hi! I'm not just a Reddit refugee, but an everything refugee. Or at least, that's how it feels. I've been online since the mid-80s, and I've seen platform after platform be acquired and burnt down under me. I'm pretty much used to it by this point.

That doesn't mean I like it.

I'm an old-time geek. Huge bibliophile, particularly fond of old science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, children's books, YA, classics, and humor. Oh, add graphic novels and manga to the list. I'm also a long time tabletop RPG player and GM. My system of choice is the Avalon Hill edition of RuneQuest 3; my RQ site might be the oldest one still existing. Of course I play other systems as well. I'm into deep role-playing, and would definitely like to find people who are interested in that sort of thing!

My primary activity over on Reddit was recommending books. I have a resource of nearly a thousand book recommendations that I have created over the years. Hoping to be able to make recommendations on Lemmy, too.

What else? I'm a pretty good public speaker, and was an invited program participant (i. e. panelist) at a regional New England science fiction convention for over 25 years. I'm an atheist, but I advocate tolerance and understanding between atheists and theists (and yes, I've done panels on that topic too; they were great).

I was a redhead when I had hair, with a redheaded son. I'm the single divorced father of a newly-adult son. I'm currently unattached. Oh, and I'm apparently demisexual.

I live in Massachusetts, USA. I like cats, cooking, walking, and well-written TV and movies. I've been refining my grilling techniques for about 35 years now, on a lifelong quest to make the perfect burger.

Heya everyone. Found this place when I was looking for Reddit alternatives after getting the shut down message in Apollo. Checked the list of alternatives on a subreddit and was immediately grossed out by transphobic sites and fucking VOAT of all places being in the list, so randomly running into this place after that was very relieving.

Big into tabletop RPGs, started with Pathfinder 1st edition a long time ago but have mostly been playing D&D 5th edition with some sprinklings of OSR and PbtA-influenced games (well, game, singular. Blades in the Dark is super fun though!) Like most tabletop fans probably, I'm also into fantasy/sci-fi media.

I used to like Marvel movies but I got burnt out.
• Favorite videogames of all time include: Titanfall 2, Portal 2, Kirby Superstar Ultra, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Sonic Mania, Earthbound, Mother 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Celeste, Mega Man X, and some others I may have forgotten.

I am married to my best friend, I work in travel and travel a lot for work and fun, I am sexually adventurous, intellectually curious, and musically promiscuous.

A number of cats live with me and graciously accept my offerings of food and adoration. When I'm not adoring them, I'm either reading, playing video games, or doing something related to maps or flags, though I've found that adoring cats is an activity that stacks well with many other activities.

Feels weird to not be a programmer or something, seems that's what all the bee-hawers and fediverse users are into these days. Um, I'm autistic and have adhd, in my mid 30s, like to ride my bike, play pikmin bloom, garden, and take up hobbies quickly and then leave them for like 3 years. Oh I am also a really yuge music nerd, like, actually. Mmmmmmmyeap

I dunno if I really qualify as a "Reddit refugee" as I wasn't particularly active there...a few dozen posts, a few hundred comments, all now deleted. But it was the current reddit mess that got me looking around for other communities and finding Lemmy & Beehaw. I've been online and in various communities since basically forever (Usenet, Puppy [the easier version of Fido to run on a first-generation PC], MajorBBS, CompuServe, The WELL, IRC, etc. etc.) but I promise to try not to play the "get off my lawn" card too often.

I had a medley of jobs for the most part in the tech space, and I've been happily retired for a few years now, because my DW has a good job with a BigCo and I prefer keeping the house clean to writing more code for other people. These days I mostly just try to get outside and hike as much as I can, but I like having at least a tiny bit of online community available.

Politically I lean pretty far to the left, having spent a chunk of my youth fairly active in anarchist circles. These days I'm more of a pragmatist who just wants people to be nice to each other.

It's possible that someone will recognize this username from elsewhere, in which case: yes, it's me, and no, I don't feel like discussing things from decades in the past.

Hi everyone! I didn't actually use Reddit much, but all of a sudden everyone on Mastodon started talking about Lemmy and I thought I'd check it out.

I'll mostly use this account to talk about TTRPG stuff and the creative interests that I have around that, since this is the name I generally go by online when I talk about those things. I've managed to accumulate a lot of neglected hobbies - I'm trying to get better at drawing, I'm very much a self-taught beginner at linocut printing, I've dabbled in bookbinding and want to do more. In terms of TTRPGs I like a bit of everything, especially on the indie side, but lately I've been most interested in Into the Odd style rules light games and solo games.

Henlo, I am Gigagoblin! 30's, neurospicy, non-binary, queer. Kinda over all the labels, honestly, just trying to exist. I'm very low-energy & social situations make me spill spaghetti everywhere, but it's easier to connect online! I kinda have huge trouble getting started on things, as well as finishing them & my interests come & go. That said, I'm into writing (poetry & lyrics, mostly), music, movies (especially horror!), cyberpunk, fantasy, spooky things & Digimon. There are manga & anime I enjoy, but I'm not like, obsessed with the mediums. I also enjoy all kinds of gaming, but it's hard to commit when your brain can suddenly decide The Thing is no longer sparking joy.

Essentially, I'm trying my best in the framework I was given. I know I've treated people poorly in the past due to my own pain. It's easy to take it out on others when you're miserable & without hope. Thing is though, I'm also a parent to the most wonderful child & I need to be the kind of person she deserves.

It turns out I'm better off without the people I'd been hanging out with for 15 years, but it also means I'm basically friendless at this point. I don't usually mind the solitude, but sometimes the silence becomes deafening. I guess it's because it's no longer really a choice? Anyway, looking forward to chatting with people here! Apologies if I'm immediately coming across as super depressing, I seem to always be "going through some stuff" & I'd rather paint an honest picture of myself!

I’m a Reddit refugee, been trying Beehaw and Kbin. Kudos to whatever was done to improve the speed here, it is lightning fast today! Kbin, not so much - the owner there had to implement DDOS protection and it is largely unusable at the moment. All of this is a work in progress and is rather exciting! I am going to switch over to Lemmy in full from Reddit, and I think this will end up being just fine.

Hi all! I'm another Reddit refugee I guess. I just couldn't abide by their policies any longer so I deleted my 13 years of comments and my account and here I am.

I'm "just" a boring suburban housewife with an awesome dog and progressive political views these days, but I used to work in medical billing and I've raised two boys and two stepkids who are still in my life even though I left their dad many years ago. Five years ago my body decided to rebel against me and make me have a stroke. I am largely healed from that but it took away my active hobbies and I'm technically disabled due to chronic pain and some memory issues.

I have Huntington's Disease. I'm pre-symptomatic right now. I inherited it from my mother, who is currently living at a nursing home. I'd be stoked to find people who could relate to the whole genetic disorder thing. It's a heavy burden sometimes.

I've been active on forums on and off since the late 90's. I used to be a mod back when that was a new thing. I enjoy cooking and solitude and playing The Sims. I have a wonderful husband who also loves solitude, and we enjoy our solitude in the same house but different rooms most of the time.

I keep in touch with my friends and family through digital means for the most part because I can't drive. I meditate and loosely follow the Buddhist principles of letting go of negative emotions when possible and appreciating what is around me. I am a work in progress.

Hey all, I heard about Lemmy from Mastodon and thought I’d give it a shot. I was never much of a reddit user besides occasional lurking, mostly because the quality of discussions seemed pretty hit or miss. BeeHaw seems a lot nicer though, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

I use he/him/his pronouns. If privilege was a game of bingo, my particular demographics would likely be the free space. I try to acknowledge that and use it for good.

By day I’m a staff software engineer at a relatively large tech company (which means I write more docs than code most of the time), and by night I’m a cooking enthusiast, musician, sci fi novel fan, and exhausted parent of a toddler.

I have entirely too many interests and hobbies, which I tend to rotate through as the whim strikes me. At the moment, it's mostly Gunpla kits, Nintendo Switch (I am the filthiest of casuals), and container gardening (50/50 chance I lose interest before I get a single vegetable).
