Any idea how the user counts are generated as shown on the home page?

On Lemmy instances, are the "users / day" sections meant to be how many users are active in that time frame, or is it how many signups there are? It also gets a little confusing when it says stuff like 1.3k users online, and then 95 users on another section as if it's the total. I'm thinking this m...
