Does the RiF app still work for anyone else so long as you're not logged in?
Hard to break old habits, I kept accidently opening the RiF app. And so long as I'm not logged in I can browse reddit. Is this the case for anyone else? And do we know why?
My good sir; a SQUARE? I had given Reddit is Fun the entire 4x1 widget that auto-updated every half hour, in dark mode theme no less. That was one of the things I loved most about RiF - the clean, bare-bones and functional widget on my home screen.
But yes, since reading this thread, I put it back on my home screen and now I just read reddit in RiF while logged out. We'll see how long that lasts...
I'm using WefWef. It feels best IMO. It's no RIF but it's feeling closer than ever. It installs seamlessly via browser and just pops into your app drawer. Apparently based off Apollo too
Just came here to check the exact same thing. Went onto RiF to see what communities I can look for based on what subs I was subscribed to and it just worked.
Obviously the appeal of going on Reddit is no longer there for me but was briefly confused that I was no longer receiving a 429 error.
Same thing happened to me as well. It did ask me to log in again with a bit of a weird message. I am on the 'fuck Reddit' opinion so do want to move on as even if it is working now, It is only a matter of time before they force new Reddit on everyone.
What is confusing is how is this happening? RIF has his own servers and I would be sure RIF would point to the RIP servers to access any content. Reddit can't change my app to point to them direct if I understand it correct. I thought maybe RIF programmer sold his app to Reddit but that seems unlikely as Reddit has already stated they are not buying third party apps.
Edit. Really liking Connect for Lemmy. Very similar to RIP IMO.
I just can not understand how this would even work technically. Without the help of the original RIF programmer that is.
That being said, if Reddit is somehow doing this, it is only for short term so that they do not bleed so many people rapidly. Once all established, they will take it down app by app and eventually Old Reddit on PC continuing with their shitification.
Yeah, I made a post about it here yesterday or the day before, I think. I decided to just remove the app from my app tray and replace it with wefwef. There's less content here, obviously, but I'm beginning to think that it's a good thing. I feel more inclined to engage on lemmy, and there's a greater sense of community.
