Hmm yeah I may have caused that... I'm suspecting it was WefWef that caused lemmy.world to slow down almost to a halt... I reverted a change I made for wefwef and now the site works again, but wefwef doesn't.. I guess we'll need to troubleshoot further
As a longtime user of Apollo and new user of Lemmy, I’m trying out a number of clients right now. I’m actually really impressed with wefwef. I’m definitely rooting for you!
Yeah I had to switch to vlemmy.net for it to work, which involved creating a new account and getting it approved. If this is the type of shit we have to put up with using Lemmy then I may as well just go back to Reddit
None of the people hosting these instances were prepared for the massive influx of new users.
Lemmy is still a platform in it's infancy, many of the people running these instances are trying their hardest to keep things afloat.
Reddit is one of the largest platforms that exists and the number of people seeking an alternative is astronomical.
Besides that, if Reddit goes down, it's down. You can't just seek out another instance and use that, this is something I would personally consider a feature.
If you can, self host, there is a docker container as wefwef is open source. That helps distribute the load, and instances will not see tons of traffic coming from a single host (as wefwef proxies all requests).
