I am a mechanic. Everyone, get good snow tires. They're well worth it.
I am a former mechanic and also recommend snow tires. And chains.
Mechanic too. I use snow tires on my B6 Passat Wagon and prefer it over an AWD top heavy SUV.

- I prefer subcompact hatches but couldn't find one up here when I moved, so I settled for '01 Forester. They're smaller than the new ones which is the only reason I considered it
  
  My wife drives a 2014 Mazda3 hatch and my other is a 2001 mk4 vr6 gti. Hot hatch FTW. Subaru's are easy to work on.
