I'm glad to see speeds are increasing again, there are some work loads that you can't just throw more cores at.
But the power due to these frequencies is getting crazy...
Unfortunately yeah. So much energy wasted as heat.
Speeds can’t increase forever though because physics. I was under the impression 5ghz was near the theoretical limit, so I don’t believe we’ll see 7ghz any time soon.
Plus, it was one less thing to worry about when picking a CPU since most of them have the same speed
Clock speed is a bit less important than generational uarch improvements (IPC). I'd prefer a 20% improvement in IPC over a 20% increase in clock speed because the former uses less power overall.
So to me, clock speed isn't particularly interesting, benchmarks are. And the benchmarks for this gen aren't particularly interesting.
