Fun fact from the same Wikipedia page: he actually picked the name Gay as a translation from Fröhlich, meaning "happy"
Honestly, I think he's morose but identifies as gay.

On a related note, if your last name is Gay and you run for office, I enjoy seeing signs like "Vote Fred Gay."
