One of the first jumpscares I ever experienced was flipping to a random page in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and seeing this face. https://www.scaryforkids.com/pics/stories-to-tell.jpg I literally threw the book away from me.
I will never forget the one where a spider laid an egg sac in a girls cheek

I remember the stories themselves being so tame compared the illustrations. I can barely remember the stories but the pictures are forever burned into my mind
They're iconic! Can you believe they tried to republish the series with different artwork a while back!?
I saw those, it was made me realize that the pictures carried the book.
