Folders vs. tags?

I'm just starting to move over to thunderbird and don't fully understand the differences between tags and folders or why both exist. I'm using gmail at the moment, and am aware that thunderbird's folders are what correspond to gmail's labels. Is there any point to using tags at all? Practical differences/benefits in the way they present themselves as compared to emails sorted into folders? Any use case for both tags and folders concurrently?

  • Tags represent flat structure while folders allow you to build some hierarchy.

    • Oh darn it. I was getting an error and I thought they weren't because I couldn't see them in the magazine. Thanks for letting me know.

      • Yep, it's two bugs. One is that it gives you an error even though the post was successful. The other is that new posts don't show up correctly in the default "hot" sort order. If you upvote your own post, that'll fix the sorting bug.
