The past decade has seen some truly great horror movies, including the arrival of some outstanding new directors like Jordan Peele, Ari Aster, and more. Looking back at the past 10 years shows how good horror has been.

I think Smile 2 was really really bad. I was really disappointed because the first one was pretty good.
And are there really people who like the ending enough of Barbarian to consider it an overall good film?
- That's interesting, I felt Smile was mediocre and ripped off It Follows a fair bit while Smile 2 felt a little more original and went off the rails in some fun ways.
  Barbarian to me had a similar issue to weapons in that they both kind of fall apart at the end. But I think the journeys they take you on are definitely worth the price of admission.
  
  My biggest issue with Smile 2 is that the end makes everything else happening in the film kinda meaningless. Where in the first film the Smile seems to follow rules it became totally OP in the second.
  I think Weapons did not fall off as hard as Barbarian, because it managed the expectations better. It wasn't great, but I did not expect more. Barbarian though build a lot of tension in the beginning but than it turnt into the most 08/15 horror film you could imagine. But maybe Barbarian actually set the low bar of expectations for me :D

Ever since covid I find horror has especially been on a roll. Some of my favourites have came out the last few years.
Smile 2 is the best 2024?
Good list otherwise.
Picking one per year seems arbitrary.

  I'm not a horror movie fan but I took a look at what came out in 2024, looks like a decent list.
  I've still yet to see Smile 2, but I did this out of curiousity :)

Barbarian had an interesting premise but really fell off the rails in the second half. I accidentally giggled when I saw the rubber boobs come out.
Even though 2025 wasn't on this list, I really liked Weapons for the social commentary. Though a few scenes were a bit hamfisted, it really nails the distrust in schools, struggles with addiction, brutality, violence and feelings of loss after school shootings. The supernatural mechanics were intriguing, and the antagonist was so interesting that I'd like to see a whole movie about them.
Also, the dude who played a drug addict did an excellent job. He really knocked it out of the park, and him breaking into the home was a brilliant film mechanic. Genuinely, that film had some amazing horror scenes that didn't rely on cheap jump scares or CGI monsters. I think that's what I like best about this movie.
