High school football player left with broken spine as opponent jumps on him in unsportsmanlike move

No defense for this one, it's clearly a deliberate act. I get that sometimes a bad hit happens and that's a whole different safety discussion but this kid knocked the victim down (because football), got up, stood over him and belly-flopped him into the ground. I wonder how many other kids he's maimed with that move.

So, will the offending player be charged with assault? This was no accident, and should, surely, be treated as any other unprovoked violent attack.
