Pavel Durov on Charlie Kirk's recent murder
Pavel Durov on the recent killing of Charlie Kirk:
Charlie Kirk fought for open debate, and enemies of truth hated him for it. Free expression is under attack everywhere. Once free speech is lost, every other freedom soon follows. We must continue Charlie’s mission to defend it. [twitter]
While Charlie is irreplaceable, the world definitely needs more people who defend freedom of speech and engage in open debate. Charlie’s bravery, patience and eloquence will inspire generations. [twitter]
Charlie was always ready to defend his views in debate. His opponents couldn’t win fairly, so they killed him instead. I may not agree with everything he said, but I’d die for his right to say it - on his Telegram channel http://t.me/CharlieKirk [twitter]
On Telegram:
@charliekirk’s death is an assault on free speech. He fought for open debate, and enemies of truth hated him for it.
Free expression is under attack worldwide. Once free speech is lost, every other freedom soon follows. We must continue Charlie’s mission to defend it [telegram]
What a load of bullshit. While yes, he kinda was pro open speech, his opponents still didn't know what they got themselves into most of the time. I remember a video where an opponent said "I didn't know this invitation to state my views was on stage in front of so many people while you're bombarding me with questions." I mean I wouldn't be able to hold my ground at all. So Durov's statement "His opponents couldn't win fairly, so they killed him instead" is a fuckton of bullshit. I didn't even catch that the shooter was an "enemy" of his.
Yes, it's typical of these people to believe/say that in society ideas are exchanged on a fair playground, while in reality the discussion is gamed in favor of the power that be from the start. Durov like many other knows this damn well but "free speech" is a selling point for Telegram and Durov is a propagandist as much as Kirk, that also believes in competition as the driving force of any kind of progress, so it's not really surprising to hear these words spent in favor of a "debater" like Kirk. He could have just shut the fuck up though, like he does with all the other political activists murdered by their own governments and not by the hatred they caused
