For the First Time in 40 Years, Panama’s Ocean Lifeline Has Vanished

  • The annual phenomenon of upwelling in the Gulf of Panama failed to occur in 2025 for the first time on record…

Each year during Central America’s dry season (typically December through April), northern trade winds trigger upwelling in the Gulf of Panama. This process brings cold, nutrient-rich waters from deep in the ocean to the surface, sustaining productive fisheries and shielding coral reefs from heat stress...

…The results reveal how climate instability can disrupt long-standing oceanic systems that have supported coastal fisheries for millennia.

Wow. Hopefully it will be a one year fluke… but even then that’s a massive hit to local ecologies and economy. And unfortunately, one year flukes doesn’t seem to be the trend. But we can still hope, for Panama and the planet’s sake.

    • And it's effects are going to be felt globally. I wonder at what turning point, if ever, people will get serious about climate change.

      • I think a lot of people are serious about it. Just like they’re serious about Palestine and other global crises. The problem is the people profiting and populaces that just haven’t quite got the memo yet that their house is indeed on fire. They’ve been bought off with a lifestyle that’s a lie.

But, there are people and countries who have been trudging forward all over the globe. I’m just praying there is a rubber band snap at some point, once we get through all this current global muck.

The countries that are resisting need to get on board or collapse. US, Canada, Russia, China and Australia all need to let go. All of them are facing tremendous pressure at home— they’re hurting their people in more ways than one and this rise of right-wing crap has an expiration date. It’s just not a pretty one. It can’t ultimately save them but rather it’s the death throes of an unsustainable life.

It happened with the end of the first Industrial Revolution and rise of the second and it’s happening again today. Oil overtook coal and renewables will overtake Oil. It just took two back to back world wars last time we were up against this level of energy shift.

But there are countries and people creating the blueprints for our survival. We just need to let the titans crumble. They seem too big to fail but the British Empire was once too big to fail.

But when the world is ready the maps and systems will be there; they’re just being birthed in places we’re not used to looking at.

      • When they are directly affected .... like a hurricane blows away their house ... a tornado destroys their home ... a forest fire burns down their dwelling... or a mini ice age snow storm makes their area uninhabitable ...

Until then, most people will be content as long as things are happening somewhere else.

I always use the analogy of the burning house .... in this case, the house is on fire. By standers and people looking at the situation know the entire building will burn down ... it's just a matter of time. But the person in the living room inside the burning house doesn't mind, because he can't see or smell the fire yet. People are shouting at someone in a bedroom but that person doesn't want to hear it, closes their windows, draws the blinds and turns up the music to ignore everyone. They don't care because there's no fire or smoke in their bedroom.
