So realistically, the apocalypse this guy was waiting for took another 1600 years to show up and didn't even take out the nation he was in at the time, which WAS STILL AROUND.

This isn't wild speculation or belief in the supernatural. The effects will be catastrophic no matter what at this point, and it only worsens each day the machine chugs along.
