Hahahahaha!
Translation: with the removal of these tariffs, grocery stores could see their profits becoming even larger as their costs go down while prices continue to sneak upwards.
This makes sense though? The consumer pays for the tariffs, not the U.S.. The price increase on U.S.-imported groceries from tariffs will be removed, making prices come down to how they were before we placed tariffs on them.
The tariffs go away but the prices don’t have to drop if the board of directors decides everyone’s already adjusted to the new normal so they’ll just pocket “savings” and leave prices alone. Wouldn’t want to create any waves in the markets by suddenly dropping prices, anyway I’m sure.
IF corporations would be fair and not greedy bastards? Sure.
Price go up, they never go down. Food Companies will not drop their prices to what they were before tariffs. We already seen this with post-Covid
Consumers tend to pay what the market will bear. It's not impossible for food prices to come down but it isn't a 1:1 relationship of tariff to price increase/decrease.
Its also that Trump's tariffs are all illegal according to the existing NAFTA/CUSMA.
Our counter tariffs were also illegal according to those agreements. Which is why they were dropped. Having them in place just gave Navarro and Trump actual legal standing.
Yeah I think this make sense. Tariffs aren't needed if Canadians just voluntarily choose not to buy US, in that case the tariffs are redundant and actually hurt the people that have no other option than to deal with the US.
