I want to make a Mastodon for NSFW art, but I am pretty new to the Fediverse
I have been off social media for a while and I'd like to make a Mastodon account to post my nsfw oriented art. What instances are best for this purpose and what etiquette rules would apply for posting adult art particularly on the Fediverse?
Packmates.org is ok with NSFW stuff and it is run by our own Lemmy admin @Wander.
Number one rule with NSFW art on Mastodon in general? USE CONTENT WARNINGS! I cannot express this enough. Content Warnings let people know what the post contains and will keep it blurred till they have made an informed decision to click it to see the content that was blurred.
Also be sure to add alternate text that describes what is going on in the image itself. This is not so much for you as it is accessibilities for those with disabilities.
I think I'll go with packmates then; The alternate text part is very useful as well, I'll keep it in mind.
- Choose an instance where the rules don’t forbid the content you want to post. If you’re looking for exposure of your own art, you’ll particularly want to avoid choosing an instance that has onerous rules. (One example of such a rule might be that porn needs to be posted as “unlisted” or followers-only.)
- Mark the media as sensitive. How you do this will depend on what interface/client you’re using.
- Use the “content warning” feature. This is not a place for a full description. Instead, imagine it from from the perspective of someone who would not want to see it. What keywords or descriptors would be useful to allow them to know that they shouldn’t click to show it? (A useful minimum would be something to indicate that it’s illustrated or RL, that it’s furry or feral or whatever, the apparent sexes of the characters, and any extreme fetishes depicted.)
Hmm those are very good pointers; I was especially unaware of the first, I didn't know different instances have different rules to that extent, It makes me glad I asked beforehand.

Checking the people I follow on my AD Masto, most people seem to on yiff.life , meow.social or rubber.social , so those instances might be worth looking at (although I have a personal and perhaps petty grevance with meow for defeding the first instance I was on).
Content warnings are, as mentioned, also really important. Just remember some people have text based autofilter rules to filter out things, so don't try to be too fancy with wording.
If you want to maximise reach, remember to use hashtags! Many users use them to find content (you can follow hashtags). If you're a furry artist, consider #furry and #furryart . And as a convenience for those that want to filter it out, consider #nsfw as well.
If you want to cross post to a Lemmy community as well, you can include something like:
CC: @communityname@instanceIn the post body, and it'll get automatically submitted to the appropriate community.
Thankyou for the pointers mentioned; So the way I hear it short descriptive content warnings. The hashtags will be very helpful and I never considered that I could cross post to lemmy.
